There's only one caveat in trading Bender - the Joe Johnson rule. A bit like the Brandon Knight rule where trading future picks leaves us all annoyingly hanging on for years to weigh up the merit of the trade, which is obviously not recommended, I'd be nervous about trading Bender having broken down his stats pre and post injury. No need to explain how we fleeced Boston for 'unknown goods' - if bender can shoot the 3 he's going to be GD dangerous.

(just don't remind me how Sarver subsequently fleeced us all by low-balling Johnson....Man that team should have won at least one title - Nash, Johnson, Matrix, Amare...:barf:)

Ugh not gonna comment on years gone by, but I will say, anyone who has actually watched Bender sees some serious potential. The guy has a feel for the game of basketball. He's not a stiff. I'd say he's got a better feel for the game right now than Alex Len. Be very cautious dealing a guy like that.

The JJ thing is overblown. In the end he wanted to be "the guy" which he was for Atlanta. When Atlanta signed the offer-sheet I believe he asked Phoenix to not match and they traded Diaw and the picks.

Was it the 07' pick that was top-3 protected that we just missed out on (#3 Horford)?

Maybe but if we'd locked him in to $36m / 4yrs at the start of the season which is what I though he was after (feel free to correct my memory) rather than say to him - prove how good you are, he may have stuck around.

Suns: JJ, here's the deal you want, sign it and let's win some titles. After 4 years go and be the man somewhere else if you want, you're still gonna be young, but this team could be special.

JJ: Okay.

Absolutely. Gotta be pro-active. Our apathy likely cost us JJ, and thus a title.

About the trouble in Knicks-land. It's Jackson. But there is also alot of frustration with Hornacek. I was a Horny fan in the beginning, but this might be a pattern. It doesn't take much imagination to believe the problem lies with Melo, but that doesn't explain Porzingis.

A recent report by Begley included an anecdote from a March loss to the lowly Nets, in which Anthony got into a loud, expletive-laden shouting match with head coach Jeff Hornacek and assistant Kurt Rambis. “Anthony’s R-rated rant essentially questioned the direction of the entire organization,” according to Begley, and as it occurred in the locker room during halftime, the whole team, including Porzingis, would have heard it.

Another lowlight took place earlier in the season, when point guard Derrick Rose took a night off without notifying the team, but a more long-standing problem was the offense, which oscillated between Jackson’s favored triangle and Hornacek’s more conventional sets. “We’re really basic,” Porzingis said last month. “A lot of times it’s — especially one on one — whoever it is, myself, Carmelo, Derrick, Courtney, we try to make something happen and that’s not how it’s supposed to be. It’s very random.”

Rose described the Knicks’ offense as “random” in February, indicating that Porzingis may have been taking some of his cues from his veteran teammates’ dissatisfaction with the team. In any event, Jackson now has two major problems on his hands, given that he must get Anthony to waive his no-trade clause while trying to mollify his squad’s other marquee player.

I would have loved to have seen 1 more year with JJ, Amare, Nash, and Marion. I'm pretty sure they would have had a much better shot at the title compared to any of other Nash years. They found their groove in the playoffs right before JJ broke his face and everything fell apart.

Not me. JJ gave us another dimension that was never the same after his departure.

Disagree. That team without Diaw in 06' in one and done. Raja was a better defender/3p shooter and perfect fit with the ball dominant Nash.

Id prefer JJ in 2010 instead of JRich. Maybe they make it to the Finals that year.

You speak the truth. Sarver should have signed JJ to an extension instead of telling him to go prove himself the next season. This was a horrible mistake.

I never did understand the Knicks fascination with hiring Hornacek especially with Anthony on the team and him being under the spotlight in New York where everything is magnified.

Don't forget about Raja's calf injury. They win game 1 vs Dallas, he gets hurt and lose 4 of the next 5. Nobody to guard Terry and Howard.

If Nurkic returns the Blazers will be tough.

Watching GS with Durant just seems unfair haha. There is no other team close to them in terms of starting talent and roster depth. Just not fair. They're going to be very good for a very long time.

I would've rather had Diaw and Raja. Unless they kept JJ and still signed Raja which I doubt.

They signed Raja right out of the gate in FA while tendering JJ. He was supposed to originally come off the bench, along with KT. Those two guys were supposed to be added to the intact core of the 2004-5 team... and if they ever would have played a healthy season together, I have no doubt they win a tithe.

I think both parties knew they were moving on before the actual trade although that time period is shady for me.

Starting with the Q-Rich trade. Did they pull the trigger on that deal projecting more responsibility for JJ or they wanted some bigs in Kurt Thomas and Brian Grant? Did they know something about Amare's knee? Was Bryan Colangelo aleady eyeing to leave with the cash saving deals?

Raja was signed on Day 1 of FA and Thomas was traded before before FA even started. They were loading that team up, no doubt about it.

They also traded for House and Jones for depth. The 06' team would've been interesting for sure.

Nash
Bell
JJ
Marion
KT

Both Thomas and Grant missed a lot of games though. Diaw was huge that year but he wouldn't have been there...

07' they win it all but I think they would've won it anyway without the shenanigans. JJ could run some point so they wouldn't throw away that cash on Marcus Banks most likely. Is there a franchise with more frustrating "what if" discussions than the Suns?

If the Suns are guilty of anything it is too much tinkering. A little more patience and continuity would have helped. Sometimes it was the owner, as in he JJ situation. He should have signed him earlier and then he should have matched, even if JJ did not want to leave. He would not do it now. Teams do not let RFA's leave if they want to keep them, regardless of what the player says. Sometimes its the player. Shawn Marion should have been happy with what he had here.

The Spurs make relatively few deals and they rarely tinker with their core.

After reading Jack McCallum's book it was clear the attention the two other stars got rubbed Marion the wrong way. I don't really blame him for feeling that way.

Nash and Amare got all the credit and played zero defense. Shawn did all the dirty work and was a better rebounder than Amare. By all accounts he wasn't a cancer but that might've changed in the weeks leading up to the Shaq trade.
