Looking forward I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. We don't need to take on expensive contracts at this time because we can't even afford to keep the players we have moving forward. We have around 22 expiring contracts which most are starter quality or starters. There is no way we are going to resign them all and next year our talent level will inevitably be lower than this years. To add insult to injury we will have an aging Larry Fitz and Palmer if they both decide to stay. Our window isn't two years it's one year.

http://overthecap.com/free-agency/ Click on Cardinals 2017. That's ugly.

We are entering a rebuild in a few months. There is no way around that. This is the point of the salary cap. It is intended to dismantle good teams and we have been good for an extended period in terms of NFL time.

Look at the Patriots as an example of a team that extends that window in the trade they made today. I don't recall us doing anything like that? We have a lot of problems and no margin of ever.

We got to watch a great team the last few years and unfortunately we are just going to have to be a little patient with the team for a few more.

Well at least it looks like they can finally cut Washington this off season.

As of now they're about $37mil under and might rework a few deals. Of course this will change quite a bit.

Calais is likely gone

Floyd is definitely gone.

2017 is probably Palmers last year unless he restructures

The way to keep the magic going is to draft well, consistently. And get draft picks every time you let a decent player go - like the Patriots. As long as you have a steady stream of talented, CHEAP, young players coming in, you can keep the magic going.

The most Patriots thing the Cardinals could ever do would be to trade Campbell before the deadline tomorrow(?) and get real draft picks. And I'm not saying the Cardinals should trade Campbell. That would be a ballsy move for sure. More the move of a team comfortable in its own skin that's already won several championships and not the move of a team jonesing to win its first.

They can extend his roster bonus out on the cap. They don't have to pay his salary since he's suspended.

Same thing would happen if Fitz or Palmer retired--their paid money stays on the cap until it's gone or they're cut.

I kind of get what your are saying, but if you are a team with a lot of age, and a lot of money tied up in age, and on top of that your team is playing like a steaming pile of dog poop........is it really that bad of a situation to have a lot of veteran free agents at the end of the year.

Its not like these older veterans are going to be better next season. I see that situation as optimal if you ask me.

Besides Chandler Jones, and Tony Jefferson, who really needs to come back from that list ?

Not to mention players like:

- Justin Bethel
- Corey Peters
- Troy Niklas

can easily be cut, and that will give this team more cap room.

Going into 2017, the Cardinals have about 37 mil in cap space, and only about 450k in dead money. You could not ask for a better situation to reload/rebuild if you ask me.

I would like to keep Jaron Brown and DJ Swearinger as well

I'd keep Peters.

Why? Good player and all, but we have loads of young players that can play NT on the team right now for pennies on the dollar. Cutting Peters would save 3 million against the cap, and allow Gunter or Xiaver Williams to play NT.

If next year is a re-build year, then having Peters for a year is not going to serve any purpose, IMHO. And again, I like Peters, he is a good player.

You know what, I think I like that idea. I was all for having Gunter play his natural position this year. But I think he's proven he just doesn't have the instincts to shed blocks and make plays that it takes to be really good at playing that position - like Campbell. The one thing Rodney is really good at is pushing the pile. Maybe they can convince him to go on the super high carb / high calorie heavyweight powerlifter diet and add 40 lbs of muscle and fat and be an unmovable force in the middle for the next five years.

Stanton: $4M for a backup QB

Goodbye

Also Mike Iupati is a good cut option. Hes done fine at LG, but hes not worth his $$$.
Bethel (too much $ for a special teamer), DWash and Niklas can all go.

We MUST find a way to pay and keep Tony Jefferson, thats all I know.

Mike Silver is tight with Palmer and said he could retire at any time regardless of his contract. Money won't decision as we know from the Bengals situation.

Yes but we need to resign someone
I think they can offer a 3mil year contract to floyd
Cutting Bethel and stanton ar logical choices
Iupati if he takes a paycut ok, if not trade him
I hope this wetzel can be a good surprise for us
Secondary? move bucannon to his old spot and play jefferson free safety
Sign a free agent ILB and draft one in round 2 or 3
The first pick must be a qb, no reason to wait

You cant force picks like that. Almost always a guaranteed bust.

What if we are picking 20th, and 5 QBs get picked before us. Should we use our pick on the 6th best QB available? Of course not.

Franchise QBs are the rarest things in sports and finding them is a combination of luck, scouting skill and mostly luck.

Kaaya is our best option. He should go 10-20, so we'll have to move up to get him, but not #1 overall.

Otherwise, it has to be a mid round shot in the dark.
