no but the last few great defenses to win championships have had great pass rushes.

you can argue this all day long they go hand in hand they both help each other out, but the highest paid defensive players play up front
Which ones...Eagles and ?

How do we get Chris Jones from KC? He will probably get 18-20m/year (Donald is at 22m)

KC certainly can't pay him with what they have paid Frank Clark, T Hill, honey badger, and Watkins (dude is stealing again).

Can they even franchise him at 17m? I think they will only have 21m in total cap space for 2020.
Chris Jones isn't going anywhere.

I don't understand how you can argue to pencil in Jalen Thompson as a starter at S, but not Zach Allen as a starter at DE? It is the same argument essentially. If, as it is IMO, a pick and choose, I would rather pay a S who is going to get 100% of snaps vs a DE who is going to see 60%.
At least Jalen Thompson has played a significant amount of snaps along with his cohort. But if you want to raise the amount of must-fill starting spots to 9, I won’t stop you there. The roster sucks.

The Thompsons have shown flashes, and Allen only played in three games.

We just can’t sustain immediately replacing players we drafted with free agents, especially high paid ones. Safety has been a position where we see players that are underpaid for their talent. I dunno.

Again...your argument doesn't fit. Youcan't say we have a trash roster and then say certain positions are off limits.

Here is where I start and end...add top end players that are going to see the most snaps, help Murray be successful and keep the Cardinals is games.

S, CB, OL are those three spots IMO.

Justin Simmons
Byron Jones/Chris Harris
Jack Conklin/Conner McGovern

I don't know these guys are all going to be available, but this should be were we start targeting in FA.

"Underpaid S's"

Patrick Chung gets 7 mil per year.
Devin McCourty gets 9.5 mil on the same roster.
For the most frugal org in the NFL when paying top players.

Ravens pay
Earl 13.5
Tony Jefferson 8.5.

1st resign DJ Humphries

Then i would do these additions through free agency

OC rodney Hudson will be 31 but just 4games missed in seven seasons

OT George Fant a Sweezy type of signings, let him compete with a rookie (second rounder)

DE Chris Jones kind of player we really need to change drastically this defense

ILB Corey Littleton a great cover lb to pair with Hicks

Draft :

1 CEEDEE LAMB WR
2 trade up for wirf or draft OT Leatherwood/Jones /mecky Becton
3 pass rusher Kenny Willakees/ Bradley Anae
4 Zach Moss rb utah
Add a ilb and nose tackle late
I like the plan but the smart thing to do is tag Humphries. There is no way we will be able to afford all four of your suggested FA’s. Jones will probably be tagged anyway.

We need two lb’s. I love Littleton and we may have to draft one.

Oh gee idk Denver!, the Baltimore teams, The Steelers the Bucs all the last teams to ride defense to the championship had a great pass rush.

they go hand in hand. They help each other out. But the fact the highest paid players on defense are pass rushers let’s you know all you need to about importance.

You can argue to try to be right or you can listen and hear what data is saying.

Or you can listen.

but I get it being “right” is important.

fact is you can’t go wrong upgrading this defense anywhere

Denver had a GREAT secondary...and you're starting to talk about almost a different era completely when the Bucs won one.

The idea of paying corners and not paying pass rushers is grounded in the idea that you can generate past rush if you just trot out 4 solid pass rushers, but it is much more difficult to find top cover guys.

Right cause Von Miller and crew making Cam run for his life the entire game had nothing to do with it.

you help your secondary by getting to the QB with your base guys if you can do that and drop everybody then it’s like a bonus.

You look at the best defenses in the NFL and they prioritize the secondary over the front 4 in terms of veteran talent. If we are trying to get to that level, a good starting point is building a solid, veteran secondary.

This is a unique year where there are options to do this in FA.

And Denvers defensive spending is one of the reasons they have sunk. Teams have to balance spending and if I have to choose between top pass rusher and top corner, I'm going to go corner. Then I sign the Markus Goldens of the NFL and draft and few day 2 and day 3 pass rushers.

Prioritizing the secondary doesn't mean you ignore front 7 talent. We have our Von Miller in Jones...now we need to secondary if we are to use your example.

Yep. Good secondary players are harder to find than good front seven IMO.

John Elway being an idiot has sunk that team

Of the top 25 highest paid defensive players in the NFL only 3 play in the secondary and none in the top 20.

that alone let’s me know what is prioritized by NFL GM’s. You would think if they were super hard to find they would be more valued...odd

I think they should focus on the D overall in FA and continue building the offense early in this draft again.

I like Jalen Thompsons future but more experience back there in the secondary is vital in a division with Kittle and all the next generation TE's.

I’m tired of arguing this. Tell me who the other starters are going to be if you dump your available cap on a safety. I’ll be quiet for now.

Do you want to know how of those 25 play for one of the top 10 defenses in DVOA?

5.
Dee Ford
Everson Griffin
Khalil Mack
Aaron Donald
Cam Jordan

You can do the math on how many of those players play for the same team.

We have a player in that pay range. So you are correct, NFL GMs prioritize one of their front 7 players in the top25 in the NFL...we already have one.

Not sure, but with Simmons at least you have someone to cover a tight end on the team.

Unless we are OK with letting TE's continually beat us every game.

Top 3 Free Agent signings (not currently Cardinals):
- OT: Jack Conklin, or Brandon Shell
- ILB: Joe Schobert, or De'Vondre Campbell
- S: Justin Simmons, or Anthony Harris

Cardinals should re-sign:
- DJ Humphries
- Cassius Marsh
- Rodney Gunter
- Pharoh Cooper

This may get this team to .500

Still leaves HUGE holes at RB, WR, TE, and DL.

One would hope a draft pick from last year or the upcoming draft helps in those areas.

Sorry for how awful I sounded when typing out that I was tired of it. Didn't even realize I came across terribly. My bad!

That still terrifies me at OLB, but thanks for proposing some names. I don't think Conklin will hit the market, sadly. I guess I'm just worried that we only have two picks to rely on becoming starters as rookies, and way more holes than that. I'd rather supplement the safety position with a guy on Tre Boston's level, or even HaHa Clinton-Dix, just someone cheaper that might be available after the draft.

I don't want to be shoehorned into taking someone at a position in round 1 or two because we didn't fill it.
