Others will contradict me, but I believe he can be traded now, but we could only get 15 million in contracts in return not this full $30 million.
I think you are correct. Found this:

- A player's outgoing salary for matching purposes is now only equivalent to his salary guarantee. So a player with a $5M partial guarantee on a $10M contract counts for $5M in outgoing salary.

I would say that it would appear they want a full 30 million in contracts back but the report that says the Suns plan on basically running it back with him seems to dispel that's the plan. I sure hope that is b.s.

The Suns may be hoping for a Westbrook type trade to come along if they keep Paul.

A mid-season roster overhaul is not a recipe for playoff success as we just saw. This team needs to have its core stars and key contributors in place to start the season.

Why would that be? If the new team keeps him, they'll be paying him $30 million, and their cap number would go way up if they were sending out only $15 million.

I agree. It didn't work out well at the trade deadline last season either.

Because a team could cut him before the 2nd portion of his contract is guaranteed. They would only be on the hook for 15 million. You have to wait until it's fully guaranteed to get the full 30 million back.

Just going to say if the Suns actually do want CP3 back I am really questioning management. I am really hoping this is a ploy to try to convince others we aren't going to cut him.

I think they are looking at 8-10 free agents, and they will need bodies. He's still of value when healthy. Likely looking at his final season in PHX. Since removing him won't help with the cap, might as well use him. I think the key is not to depend on him.

I feel like that’s impossible if he’s the starting PG.

There's going to be a new coach. Plus, all NBA guys know, it's not who starts games, but who ends games. Anyway we need guys who can make shots and play defense. There is a lot besides CP3 we have to get done.

My understanding is that he must be waived BEFORE trades can actually happen. I may have the dates wrong, but it's something along the lines of Paul having to be waived by June 27th, and new trades can happen July 1st, or something like that. If they trade him, his $30M is guaranteed. It's still a nice expiring contract, but the new team would not be able to take advantage of the $15M savings.

That's how I always understood it and then @Phrazbit threw a wrench into that logic. I have sent a tweet to Larry Coon about clarification. He's the CBA guru that wrote the FAQ so hopefully he responds. He typically does.

Also, since Paul's contract is not guaranteed for the 2024-25 season, it would act like an expiring contract and might be attractive at the trade deadline.

I know he has to clear waivers for us to be able to do anything with his contract. That was according to Woj, I believe. IDK if he has to clear waivers to be traded. I know before they started talking about the new CBA, talking heads were talking about Suns trading bot Ayton and CP3 for multiple pieces in return. Not sure if they knew how the new CBA would affect that.

I don't get why people are surprised or questioning the decision to guarantee CP3's contract this next season. The team is cash strapped and the cupboards are bare of assets. There is no way whether he's waived or not we are bringing in a better PG next season. We might not even have the taxpayer MLE available, and blowing that on a PG isn't going to provide more than what CP3 offers.

Hoping we can get a lower level guy who can play.

Waivers only matter if he were waived. It would have been dumb in term of asset management to waive him and then resign him for less than the $15 million difference in guaranteed money because we'd then be spending our MLE on him.

True. I was responding to the conjecture he may have to pass waivers before a trade.

Report: Suns receive permission to interview 3 assistants for head coaching job

The Phoenix Suns have received permission to interview NBA assistant coaches Charles Lee, Darko Rajakovic and Jordi Fernandez as their coaching search ramps up, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. - From www.ArizonaSports.com

Rajakovic's bio looked good to me:

Rajakovic, who is on the Memphis Grizzlies’ staff, is familiar with Phoenix and served under fired Suns coach Monty Williams in 2019-20, Williams’ first season in the Valley.

The assistant was credited with bringing offensive concepts to the team led by Devin Booker, Kelly Oubre Jr., Deandre Ayton and Ricky Rubio.

Rajakovic also is known for his player development skills, including helping then-second-year pro Mikal Bridges tweak his jump shot.

Rajakovic has experience in the G League and overseas. Before joining the Suns, he was with the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2014-19, where he notably was on staff in Kevin Durant’s final two years on the team

I'm not familiar with him but he sounds interesting.

Lee has been an assistant with the Bucks since 2018...Mostly played overseas during his career.

Fernandez spent about 4 years as assistant with Nuggets and this past year joined Sacramento as associate Head Coach. It would be intriguing to get someone super familiar with the Suns main competition. He has a longer coaching resume that goes back to 2006.

I would assume Fernandez would know more about international players, too. We need to scour the world to find overlooked talent to sign.

It appears the Suns may not go with a more obvious HC if they are asking permission for assistants.

I watch the Locked On Suns podcast by a guy named Kleen, who writes for Suns.com, and he had two other assistants in the mix with Young. He was the first to mention the Suns would probably go with an assistant because of the lack of offensive minded coaches on the market.
