I have a hunch that monti took a gamble thinking mckinstry or dejean would still be on the board and clearly lost...,
I have a hunch they didn't want Kool-aid for a myriad of reasons (intensity, catchup speed, ability to smother) and didn't want cooper as a tweener safety corner coming off injury.

Everything I read/see/hear on madmax suggests he was gonna be their pick regardless.

Kool-Aid had an undiagnosed Jones fracture. I've done a bit of research and a Jones fracture is actually a pretty serious injury because it has a higher than average likelihood of not healing properly and having complications.

Sure he ran a few months later, but I think if you have two CBs close together, you avoid the guy with the Jones fracture.

In a three CB defense, I'm guessing that Williams, Murphy-Bunting and Melton would start. But, who would be our fourth CB, if it was a choice between KeiTrel Clark, Starling Thomas and Elijah Jones? And, I know the two rookies have yet to play NFL FB. Just asking for a guess.
