Not at all. We had adequate cap space and talent when Monti took the job. We weren't going to win the Super Bowl with a backup quarterback half the season and losing J.J. Watt to retirement, but we were unlikely to repeat the 4-13 result of the previous year.

This has been gone over previously. This is what The Tank was all about.

Seems funny to me considering your one of the biggest proponents of ringing the “Keim sucks” “his rosters suck” bell… To now as soon as Monti comes over we had a perfectly adequate roster. And discount the fact that we went 4-13 with a healthy Watt and Kyler for 85% of the season….
Are we going to do this again?

The center of gravity in the NFL is 7-9 wins. Cards were 4-8 before Kyler went down with the knee injury against New England. This was in a season where DeAndre Hopkins was also suspended for the first six games.

If you bring back an offense that looks like this:

QB - Jacoby Brissett, Kyler Murray
RB - James Conner
WR1 - DeAndre Hopkins
TE1 - Trey McBride
LT - The Captain
LG - [TBD]
C - Hadje Froholdt
RG - Will Hernandez
RT - Paris Johnson Jr
TE2 - Zach Ertz
WR2 - Hollywood Brown

That offense looks a lot better, right? Being worse than that was a choice.

On defense, a lineup that looks like:

DE - Zach Allen
DT - Leki Fotu
DE - [TBD]
EDGE - Zaven Collins
ILB - Kyzir White
ILB - Isiah Simmons
EDGE - Dennis Gardeck
CB - Byron Murphy
CB - Marco Wilson
CB - Antonio Hamilton/Garrett Williams
S - Budda
S - Jalen Thompson

Is probably in the bottom half of the league, but not literally the worst defense in the league. None of this hampers our ability to compete in the next year, but provides less execrable football than we were forced to endure to hopefully have Marvin Harrison Jr. drop to us.

Monti could've still done all his meaningless draft shenanigans. All he had to do was not suck on purpose.

I think there are enough complementary pass rushers out there (including Gardeck, probably) that you don't have to shell out money and draft picks for them.

I think you said almost the exact same thing last offseason, verbatim.

Maybe! I think my argument last year was we were trying to get a bunch of guys who could get 8 sacks instead of one guy who can get 14. Then we dumped Myjai Sanders and used Gorilla Glue to affix Cam Thomas to the bench so we could really see what Zaven Collins could do at edge.

He got 3.5 sacks. Sad!

I Hope Williams Is a Monti target
Then trade Rondale Moore for something
Kyler Need bigger receivers with phisicality
MHJ or Odunze/Williams/Wilson
Nice group
i would be on board if we can get him for 3/30m or less. Dude is basically a taller Hollywood Brown....one year deal would be fine too, he turns 30 mid season.

The mentality of just trying to plug holes and stay competitive is the whirlpool the Suns got caught up after the Barkley years...never having the courage to just bottom out and start over...and they are just about there again. Hopefully the Cards basically bottoming out again will end with better long-term results than when Keim was basically grasping at straws to remain competitive. Continuous quick fixes rarely bring long-term results.

So all of your hand wringing and complaining for years about Keim’s roster construction is essentially BS all this time? Got it. He was more than good at constructing an adequate NFL roster now IYO. No wonder some posters are tone deaf to other posters.

That's a non-sequitur. 1) Because the NBA is different and you're basically looking for 2-3 transcendent stars to make you relevant, and 2) more importantly, because none of these changes did anything to help clear cap or improve the team. All I did was not cut NFL-caliber players so that I could sign L.J. Collier.

The reason I turned on Keim was because he was making obviously stupid and short-sighted decisions in the moment and had done it for a long time. He was also publicly embarrassing and arrogant.

Just because the transition was handled ham-fistedly doesn't mean that was the only possible process.

You could have just said "TL;DR" for as much as you tried to just jam words in my mouth.

To be fair, K9 did a post before the 2022 season where he gave Keim a B-. It was shocking enough to be memorable.

I mean. He called Keim’s parting gift “adequate.” I took that to mean an adequate base from which to build at least a mediocre, and certainly not bottom 4, team. It’s no ringing endorsement of keim as you seem to suggest.

Yeah, if we learned anything from the post Nash era teams, it should be that when you have a terrible owner not willing to spend money on premium talent, you're gonna have a bad time! Sure there are no parallels to consider here with current Cards ownership.
