The New Orleans Saints didn't just send a bunch of key coaches to Miami's pro day -- general manager Mickey Loomis was credentialed for the event, too. The Draft Network's Ryan Fowler noted that Loomis is one of several NFL general managers expected to be in attendance, along with Mike Borgonzi (Tennessee Titans) and Glenn Book (Cleveland Browns assistant GM). New York Giants GM Joe Schoen is also expected to be in town. Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward, the consensus first overall pick in this year's draft, is at the center of all that attention.

Loomis making the trip is notable. He usually visits just one or two pro days each year, and rarely ventures far from Louisiana. While he's been a fixture at LSU and often Alabama, his few out-of-state pro day visits have taken him to Ohio State (2022 and 2023) and Louisville (2018, to see Lamar Jackson throw), and now Miami. He also went to Tulane's pro day in 2023 but that was just across town. There are probably other pro day appearances we missed, but it says a lot that his reported stops are few and far between.

So does this mean the Saints are about to get bold and trade everything to go get Miami quarterback Cam Ward? Maybe. Kellen Moore's future will be tied to his quarterback, and it's abundantly clear that Derek Carr isn't long for New Orleans. Trading for a rookie would be a big gamble but it would give Moore what he needs to run his offense and lay out a vision for where he wants to take the team. Given the cost involved in such a trade, though, it might be better to wait to target a quarterback in next year's draft.
