Yeah the last couple of seasons we were all more impressed by our 20+ udfa than we were with the rest of the picks. :D

Actually that's not too far from the truth.

I even sometimes would use the rationale of "well our draft sucked but we picked up some decent FA's!!!"

Eric Edwards TE LSU

Career Notes

Unheralded athlete with excellent blocking skills who also became an important part of the team's successful passing game as a senior ... The two-year starter at tight end for the Tigers developed into one of the best all-around tight ends in school history ... Well-respected by teammates and opponents alike, Eric combines good hands with a "take no prisoners" approach when blocking for the Tigers' ground game ... Started 22 of 38 games during his career, making 29 catches for 349 yards (12.0 avg) and six touchdowns.

Analysis

Positives: Has long arms with adequate muscle definition and a frame that can add at least another fifteen pounds with no loss of quickness ... Has a high bubble with good upper body thickness ... Shows the sudden burst needed to gain position coming off the ball ... Big target than can shield off the defender with his body ... Has large, natural hands to reach, pluck and secure the ball ... Shows toughness competing for the pigskin in a crowd ... Shows balance when in-line blocking, fighting hard to sustain position ... Gets to the second level quickly to lock on and neutralize the linebackers ... Self-starter who is very dedicated in the weight room ... Has the lateral agility to cut off an edge rusher with his reach blocks to the outside and displays the power to redirect the defensive ends inside (gets very good movement when base blocking) ... Effective short area route runner who shows a quick kick slide in pass protection.

Negatives:

Needs further lower body muscle development (slender legs) ... Quick in his release, but gets too high in his stance, giving up a lot of surface trying to get into his routes ... Has a stiff lower body with marginal ability to plant and separate ... Does not uncover vs. man coverage due to his straight-line speed ... Lacks the top-end speed needed to separate down field ... There is no shake or elusiveness after he catches the ball, but he has the strength to break tackles.

Injury Report

None

Campus Agility Tests

4.93 in the 40-yard dash ... 365-pound bench press ... 450-pound squat ... 308-pound power clean ... 28-inch vertical jump ... 8'7" broad jump ... 33-inch arm length ... 10 ¼-inch hands ... Right-handed ... 19/40 Wonderlic score.

And they will also bring in a WR. That's all they have room for. Last year, not a single UDFA made the roster. These are camp bodies, that's it.

I don't know anytjinmg about the kid form UNLV, but Shaud Williams from Ala. was very quick at the line, and often lined up in the slot, just like Shaun Alexander did. Unfortunatley Buffalo got him, probably as a third down back because I imagine it's time for McGehee (sp?) to play.

War Room analysis
Strengths: Is an underrated athlete with adequate size. Can get bigger and stronger. Is a terrific blocker who takes a very good first step and angles. Is tough and feisty. Has a strong upper body and great hand placement. Is smooth, agile receiver. Does a nice job of finding soft spots in zone coverage. Runs crisp routes. Has above-average hands. Can catch passes away from his body while on the run and adjusts to passes thrown over his shoulder. Has good experience and is a fine special teams player.

Weaknesses: Wasn't used much as a receiver. Has below-average speed and isn't a deep threat. Lacks elusiveness or a second-gear after the catch. Has adequate, but not great size. Must improve his bulk and strength to match up as an NFL blocker.

Bottom line: Edwards' collegiate production won't wow anybody, nor will his height, weight or speed. However, Edwards is an underrated prospect who could become a solid backup. He has adequate size and continues to get bigger and stronger. He is versatile and can play tight end, fullback or H-back. He is a sure-handed short-yardage receiver, a very good blocker and a solid special teams contributor. Edwards will never be a full-time starter, but he will provide good value for a team that drafts him late or signing him as a free agent.

I guess we signed these guys for special team purposes..
