Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider confirmed the team has received trade inquiries on backup quarterback Sam Howell during his 2025 NFL draft press conference. Howell disappointed in limited action throughout the 2024 season. The Seahawks have already replaced him by signing Drew Lock.
Howell could be traded during the 2025 NFL draft. We've identified three potential landing spots for Howell via trade.
Would the Seahawks consider trading Howell within the division? That depends on their (lack of) belief in his ability to develop into a franchise quarterback. Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay must find an eventual successor for Matthew Stafford.
The Seahawks have already traded one quarterback to the Las Vegas Raiders, so why not another one? All kidding aside, the relationship between the Seahawks and Pete Carroll could help facilitate something here. Howell would be a quality backup to the aging Geno Smith given their existing relationship. Carroll inherited Aidan O'Connell, and he could look to upgrade.
Tua Tagovailoa is an oft-injured quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel needs a better backup plan than he possessed last season. Howell would compete with former first-round bust Zach Wilson for snaps behind Tagovailoa in practice.

John Schneider on getting trade inquiries on Sam Howell: "Yeah, that’s accurate. We have a great relationship with [agent Bruce Tollner]. Bruce is very well known and respected throughout the National Football League, so he has a ton of contacts ... So it’s a very open dialogue." https://t.co/M4vXzVFhP2
