Despite any mystery regarding what the New York Giants plan to do at quarterback next month in the NFL Draft, there was no hesitation from Russell Wilson about the job he now has with Big Blue.
"Obviously, I’m expecting to come in there and be the starter," Wilson said Wednesday, "and earning that every day."
So began the DangeRuss Era for the Giants. How long this reign for the only quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium lasts is somewhat uncertain, given the possibility that team brass entered this offseason with the anticipation of finding the franchise's QB for the future.
At 36, Wilson has signed a one-year deal worth $10.5 million guaranteed, in addition to incentives that could bring the value of the contract up to $21 million if maxed out, an individual with knowledge of the agreement told NorthJersey.com and The Record on Tuesday night.
The Giants may end up taking a non-QB at No. 3 - the likeliest being Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter or two-way Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter of Colorado - but those with knowledge of the Giants' plans have told NorthJersey.com and The Record that Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders is "absolutely" in play.
Team brass believes doubling up at QB with veterans Wilson and Jameis Winston was necessary with the way things have broken down in the room the last two years. The Giants played three quarterbacks two seasons ago and struggled through a 3-14 campaign during which they had to play four different quarterbacks.
More to come: Giants aren't accepting QB fate after Russell Wilson deal, so expect them to keep swinging
And how about this for a full circle moment, should it happen: Wilson signs a deal with the Giants much like Matt Flynn did with the Seahawks in 2012, only to have a rookie QB outplay him surprisingly in the summer to win the job.
Sound farfetched? Flynn signed for $10M guaranteed; Wilson will get $10.5M guaranteed.
"When you play this position, my goal every day is to step on the field and help our team win, and ultimately to be the best in the world, and be one of the best that can do it," Wilson said. "I think that’s my mentality, and understanding that. I’m excited about the opportunity to lead everybody. It’s not just one room, one guy, one thing – it’s the whole organization. The thing that you realize, being a quarterback in the National Football League, you’ve got the best freaking job in the world, you’re one of 32. The reality is that you’re like a CEO in a way of an organization, the whole process of it all. And so, you’re not just leading one person."
Say what you want about Wilson and whether he did or did not want to be here with the Giants, even as they waited longer than anyone thought for Aaron Rodgers before reaching agreement with Jameis Winston and Wilson in a four-day span.
Wilson has absolutely gone to town learning the players on this roster. From praising Malik Nabers and his game-breaking ability to teasing a potential breakout for Jalin Hyatt thanks to his willingness to throw the ball downfield, Wilson name-dropped 13 different players on both sides of the ball.
"I know what my talents are, I know what I’m capable of," Wilson said. "And I’m excited to put those in between the white lines."
