I know that these guys are worried about their health, and he had lingering issues, but you don't see this level of mass retirement anywhere else. I wonder if those guys are angry with the organization.

I don't walk away from NFL money because I'm upset with someone. Heck it's hard to walk away from that much money even with health worries.

Jim Harbaugh just dissected each of these guys and removed their will to live without the constant, intense physical and psychic pressure to succeed and inflict pain on their opponents.

Without Jim Harbaugh around to motivate these guys, they stopped loving football.

It's the only possible explanation.

I wonder if someone on the team or in the front office (former player) had some serious and noticeable issues last year that freaked everyone out seeing it first hand... especially if the organization tried to suppress it.

Well yeah, clearly this and not the fact that Harbaugh just literally and figuratively wore everyone out:

“After a few years of thought, I’ve decided it will be best for me to take a year or so away from the NFL. This will be a time for me to allow my Brain and Body a chance to heal. I know many won’t understand my decision, that’s ok,” Davis said. “I hope you too have the courage to live your life how you planned it when day dreaming to yourself growing up. Your Life is Your dream and you have the power to control that dream. Im simply doing what’s best for my body as well as my mental health at this time in my life.”

Man it's so obvious those players hate playing for Harbaugh. They hate him so much they're retiring to avoid it.

Oh wait, he's in Michigan.

There has to be something going on in the organization. Is retirement a way to get out of a contract while retaining the salary for the year? A complete guess on my part.

@McClain_on_NFL: In my 37 years of covering the NFL I've never seen a team have such a devastating offseason as the 49ers.

The 2015 San Francisco 49ers are going to be Darnell Dockett and Colin Kaepernick flipping cards into a top hat on the sidelines in the third quarter when the score is 38-6.

Maybe the plan was to let them have Dockett, he goes in there and talks a bunch of guys into retirement, then we trade them Bobby Massie for DD and a 3rd or something.

Obviously what I said is incredibly stupid and not what i remotely think actually happened, but it would be the ultimate troll against the 9ers.

Nope - Davis said he is returning the prorated portion of his signing bonus and won't get his annual salary if he's not on the as of roster week 1. Also, didn't he sign a long term contract last offseason? If so, he can't just take a year off to break his contract to sign with another team next year.. the Niners would still own his rights.

I almost feel bad for the 9ers, well not almost but kinda in some I'm a long suffering Cards fan so I can empathize with their offseason this year. Remember when we lost Rolle and Los and.......all in one offseason.

9ers are going to finish last in the division this year and I put the over/under at 6 wins.

Agreed, but after you've made a few mil, if people told you that you were different, would you ever stop to re-evaluate?

If you retire, you don't get paid any of the contract. If a player sits out and then decides to play again, they return to the team they retired from with the same amount of contract they were obligated to before they retired.

So, there is not a financial or business reward to a player for retiring. If there was, you would see it all the time.

Personally, I just think it's bad luck. But these retirements over health is going to happen more, not less.

Harbaugh decided to torch the place. Only surprising because of the magnitude of the hurricane. He has always been a malcontent

I think they're just smarter than people give them credit for. He knows the team won't be in contention this year and doesn't wanna waste his body.
