One of the biggest holes left on the San Francisco 49ers roster was opened by the exit of cornerback Charvarius Ward in free agency.
There has been some speculation in mock drafts that the 49ers would address that opening with their first-round pick. History tells us San Francisco wouldn't be inclined to go that route. Last year when they selected Florida State CB Renardo Green 64th overall it was the earliest they'd selected a CB in the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era.
We'll likely see the 49ers aim for CBs later in the draft, and that's where they'd find UCF CB BJ Adams. Adams held a virtual meeting with San Francisco before the draft according to the Draft Network's Justin Melo.
Adams measured in at the combine with great size at 6-2, 182 pounds with 31 3/4-inch arms. His athleticism left something to be desired during the combine, but it wasn't an obvious hinderance when watching him. Adams uses his size well to get physical with opposing WRs which mitigates some of the issues he may have with long speed. He clocked in with a 4.58 in the 40-yard dash at the combine.
The other potential issue for Adams is his overall lack of production in college. He started 29 of the 48 games he played in college, but he managed only 11 pass breakups and two interceptions.
Still, there's plenty to like about Adams' physical profile, especially in the later rounds. He's projected by the Athletic's Dane Brugler as a sixth or seventh-round pick. If San Francisco liked what they heard from Adams in their pre-draft meeting, he'd be a good Day 3 flier with the upside to eventually take a spot in the 49ers' secondary.
