There are a number of different directions the 49ers could go with their first-round selection in the upcoming 2025 NFL draft.
San Francisco owns the No. 11 overall pick and the 49ers finding help in the trenches on either side of the ball would make plenty of sense. After dealing away Deebo Samuel to Washington to begin this offseason, drafting a wide receiver with its first pick for the second draft in a row is a move that might also make sense.
A linebacker to replace the departure of Dre Greenlaw or some cornerback help to fill the loss of Charvarius Ward would also be smart directions.
Something that most wouldn't expect is for the 49ers to go looking for running back help. But, that's precisely what The Ringer projects in its first-round mock draft.
While it would certainly qualify as a surprise, scooping a talent like Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty up at No. 11 might be too good of an opportunity to pass up if the option presents itself.
Jeanty was the Heisman Trophy runner-up after rumbling for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns in the 2024 season. The 5-foot-9, 215 pound running back also caught 23 passes for 138 yards and a score last season. During the 2023 campaign, Jeanty reeled in 43 passes for 569 yards and five scores.
San Francisco is set to return star running back Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey was limited to just four starts a season ago, but the 5-foot-11, 210 pound running back tallied 2,023 combined rushing and receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns during the 2023 regular season.
That led to McCaffrey being recognized as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
With McCaffrey coming off the injury, maybe the franchise thinks about getting him some help in the backfield and adding another toy for quarterback Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan to employ in the 49ers' offense.
