All right...8 games down and 8 to go. Here is what seems evident.

1-Josh Rosen can be a top 16 QB in this league. He makes boneheaded rookie mistakes, but he has great poise and can make spot throws when given time. He has said a lot of the right things so far, and he seems to be a grinder. He ceiling will be dependent on the system around him, but he can play.

2-DJ is still a threat in space. Don't know why we don't see more of it, but that is where he makes plays.

3-Christian Kirk is getting better, and Chad Williams can be a #4/#5 WR.

4-If you scheme to get Larry open, he can make plays.

5-Jermaine Gresham consistently makes blooper level plays and boneheaded mistakes. It is crazy that it seems to always be him. We need to upgrade at TE.

6-DJ Humphries probably needs an extension. Unfortunately we need to prepare for 5 years, 70mil with an 17 mil signing bonus. Looking at Taylor Lewan's contract and taking 10 mil off. No one is going to like it, but that is the cost of doing business at LT. He does have to stay healthy for the rest of the year.

7-I just found this out today, and can't move off of it. PFF line grades aren't the be-all end-all, but why we have Justin Pugh at RG when he was a top graded LG two years ago is beyond me. Stupid Cardinals.

8-You can build around Humphries, Pugh, Cole, Shipley and Wetzel. That group needs to stay together.

9-If we stick with the 4-3 moving forward, Gunter, Nkemdiche, Pierre and Peters is worth keeping together for one more year. It wouldn't prevent me from adding top-end players in the offseason, but this is a decent group.

10-Mayowa needs a contract extension. I would say the same for Golden, but I have no clue what he is going to cost.

11-Bucannon doesn't work in a read and react scheme.

12-Bynes is going to be a starting LB for this team next year.

13-Bene Benwikere needs a contract extension.

14-Patrick Peterson and Chandler Jones are awesome players.

15-Antoine Bethea should probably get the Corey Peters type extension.

16-This team/roster has glaring deficiencies that make it difficult to evaluate.

I was hoping to get the Cincinnati Gresham however he has fallen far short of this. I had expected 40-50 receptions for 500-700 yds. and 5-7 TDs. Instead we have only gotten a fraction of that and boneheaded plays as a bonus. Time to cut bait with Gresham.

Yep

Maybe he will go over there since Iupati is done at season's end.

8-You can build around Humphries, Pugh, Cole, Shipley and Wetzel. That group needs to stay together.

Yep, and we have Smith for another year as insurance to boot (he played better yesterday - in fact, PFF wise, our entire OL did *Leftwich-impact*)

10-Mayowa needs a contract extension. I would say the same for Golden, but I have no clue what he is going to cost.

13-Bene Benwikere needs a contract extension.

This is where I would love for Keim to show some change and sign a few of these players early - having Mayowa & Benwikere for some more time would be great for depth and flexibility in the draft, instead of playing the craps game every year (see CB, ILB past several years)

Bethea has played well for us, and he still has one more year. However he is getting long in the tooth and I would not extend him anymore... I would like to see a Tre Boston extension though.

The tough part is that I don't HATE our roster. It isn't terrible. This is why I get frustrated with our coaching. I look at our roster, and think that I am happy if these guys are around next year...

Josh Rosen
David Johnson
Chase Edmonds
TJ Logan
Larry Fitzgerald
Chad Williams
Christian Kirk
Trent Sherfield
Ricky Seals Jones
DJ Humphries
Justin Pugh
Mason Cole
AQ Shipley
John Wetzel
Chandler Jones
Bronson Mayowa
Markus Golden
Olson Pierre
Robert Nkemdiche
Corey Peters
Rodney Gunter
Josh Bynes
Zeke Turner
Dennis Gardeck
Patrick Peterson
Bene Benwickere
Antoine Bethea
Budda Baker
Rudy Ford
Aaron Brewer
Andy Lee

That is 31 guys that I am good with moving forward. Obviously system matters, but these guys can all play to a certain degree in our current system. The tough part will be finding how to fill out the remaining holes.

This guy Robert Nkemdiche I am on the fence with keeping him or jettisoning him. Yeah, he isn't going to cost that much next year however his production to date hasn't even been commensurate with his salary. Everyone said he's not a 3-4 player and would be a better fit in a 4-3. Now he's in a 4-3 and he still can't produce near a 1st round selection. He will only cost $2.7MM in 2019 but you also save $1.6 by cutting him. Only $1.1 in dead money.

I wish they would give the ball to Logan 4-6 times a game to see is he can be a game breaker. I think they are wasting him sitting on the bench.

I think Larry retires after this season.

Ricky Seals Jones doesn't do anything for me. I don't think you miss anything if he wasn't on the roster in 2019.

I think you can find better than Chad Williams for the same money.

All the players bolded will be either FAs or RFAs so ther eis a number of contracts that would need to be negotiated.

Handing Gresham ($4.7MM) and Bradford ($19.6MM) their walking papers adds $24MM to the cap. That would net you a couple of good interior linemen.

2.6 million isn't a lot for a d line depth guy with still untapped potential.

I'm actually ok with where the roster is at considering a whole lot can be freed up this offseason. It's not like the team is awful but will also be in cap hell; the team sucks, but with about 5 or 6 quality additions, it can get back to respectability.

I am indifferent when it comes to Tre Boston. I like Budda and Bethea better than him in a base defense, and don't believe he is ok with being a 50% snap role player.

Reddick is tough for me because he lacks instincts which I feel are very important for a LB. Maybe I am too negative on his ability to develop, but I am going to have to see it more than a handful of plays a week. That being said, I don't know that I would cut him next offseason either. We have to get better players to make those kinds of moves.

Ricky Seals Jones is a matchup player for me. He is valuable on a roster because his size and speed can create mismatches against opposing defenses which they will likely not gameplan for. I don't want him as my primary TE option at this point in time, but he is great to have on a roster.

No reason to get rid of Chad Williams until you improve the entire WR room. I would rather keep Williams and add a top end WR than have to add both.

I am not beholden to Jermaine Gresham, but I am not eating dead money until I have a better player ready to go.

There are a lot of guys on the roster who are playing a ton of snaps that wouldn't be for a good team. I don't think Seals-Jones is a starter for most teams in the NFL. I don't think that Reddick is, either. Wetzel probably isn't. Chad Williams definitely isn't.

Those guys should be in the 30s of your roster, not in the teens and 20s.

Wetzel is a really good backup who is constantly forced into action; I think his playing is more a function of OL health and poor drafting than anything else. Wetzel is a good swing tackle backup.

Seals-Jones should be a situational weapon off the bench. He loses his effectiveness with more snaps.

Reddick is ok as your 3rd best LB, but not as your #2?

Williams hasn't figured out the NFL game yet, and probably won't.

3A-Christian Kirk is getting better, and 3B: Chad Williams can be a #4/#5 WR.

3A - I agree with, Kirk has been a pleasant surprise, he gets better every week.

3B - Chad Williams is a bust, and needs to go. He do not do anything well enough to be playing in the NFL.

6-DJ Humphries probably needs an extension. Unfortunately we need to prepare for 5 years, 70mil with an 17 mil signing bonus. Looking at Taylor Lewan's contract and taking 10 mil off. No one is going to like it, but that is the cost of doing

DJ Humphries is one of my favorite players on the Cardinals. I like his attitude, and his love of the game. The one thing he has going for him is his age. He is 24 years old so he still has a lot of time. Problem is, he is not "great" and borderline "good". Yet, I feel this is a disappointing season so far for Humphries, and I am on the fence on where he belongs.

This is like the Levi Brown debate. There is no doubt in my mind is Humphries is way better than Levi Brown ever was, but it is the question of lack of good offensive linemen in the league, and the rest of the Cardinals offensive line is so bad, do you re-sign Humphries ? What is Humphries asking price? He is not an elite LT, and should not be paid as such.

Its a conundrum.

7-I just found this out today, and can't move off of it. PFF line grades aren't the be-all end-all, but why we have Justin Pugh at RG when he was a top graded LG two years ago is beyond me. Stupid Cardinals.

I think Mike Iupati's eventual release next offseason frees up the LG spot. Yet, Justin Pugh is a horrible football player, so I am not sure moving him to LG changes that. Pugh is the new Daryn College or Adam Snyder signing for the Cardinals.

8-You can build around Humphries, Pugh, Cole, Shipley and Wetzel. That group needs to stay together.

I disagree. Mason Cole and Humphries are two guys to keep. The rest are very replaceable. That being said, I think Pugh hangs around just for his contract not his play. I hope Shipley is not put at guard next year, or is even on the team. The extension the Cardinals gave him was stupid.

9-If we stick with the 4-3 moving forward, Gunter, Nkemdiche, Pierre and Peters is worth keeping together for one more year. It wouldn't prevent me from adding top-end players in the offseason, but this is a decent group.

The bolded statement is true, and the horse crap coaching, makes it even harder.

I am not sold on Nkemdiche, Pierre, Reddick, Benwikere, or Bethea, to just name what you have above.

Bethea is a good player but old. Agreed Bucanon has to go, just another poor draft choice and bust. I think you re-sign Marcus Golden since he will have his injury effecting his ability to get big money, thus the Cardinals could get a sweet deal there for a player I think is still an asset. Benwikere is a solid cornerback, and I would like to see him brought back, and the Cardinals sign/draft someone who beats him out for the CB#2 spot.

One thing about Haason Reddick.....I actually saw him: Shoot a gap, and play downhill. It is a whopping one time out of hundreds, but still he did it, and when he did. DAMN. He is so fast and quick. It is a shame if he never "gets it". Cause he is a special athlete when he is playing downhill.

Good write up!

I don't want to see future hall of famers on this team, whomever they may be, like the Larry Fitzgeralds, Aneas Wiliams, Roger Wherli, Dan Dierdorf, Jackie Smith, Larry Wilson's of the team end up without SB rings.

So my bar is set very high for management and staff because well it should be.

If this team wants to get there they better start looking in the mirror a lot more.

I see getting rid of Wiliams as addition by subtraction because it frees up a roster space. I agree Jones is a matchup concern for opposing defenses but it seems either they don't know how to use him or Jones doesn't really have the ability to create those mismatches on a consistent basis. I would have hoped by now we would have seen more of taking advantage of the mismatch Jones can create. As far as Gresham in concerned 2019 will be the first year we save more by cutting him so better to cut the cord now than later and it's another roster space opening up. Yes I do have concerns that if they do cut bait with Gresham, and Williams they need to acquire replacements of better caliber. If they are unable or incapable of doing so then you may be better off keeping them. Just MHO.

Wetzel is not a really good backup, because he's bad when he comes in the game. What does it mean to be a good backup that isn't good when he goes on the field? He looks the part on the sideline?

I don't think that Reddick's development trajectory is steep enough that he'll be the player you need him to be when his contract is up. He's a good 5th rusher, but did you intend to invest a Top 15 pick in a guy who looks lost in almost all other situations and is constantly asking his teammates where he's supposed to be?

I dunno. I don't have a problem with Chad Williams being the Jaron Brown of this roster. He's overdrafted for that role, but he's on the roster. He wasn't ready to the be the starting outside receiver on an NFL team. Part of that, IMO, is on the Arians staff, who didn't do a good enough job developing wideouts.

Until you bring in better WRs to force Chad Williams out, why cut him?

In regards to Shipley and Wetzel, that wasn't intended to imply that they should start at RG and RT. It was intended to state that they are valuable players in backup roles. Backup C and swing OT.

Humphries is good enough at LT. Look at the Colts with Anthony Castanzo. He has always been good enough at LT and once the rest of the line was improved, his play is no longer in question. I am to the point that I believe that a good offensive line can have DJ Humphries at LT as long as he can stay healthy. That should cost 10-12 mil per year. Pay it and move on.

Benwikere, Bethea, Pierre and Nkemdiche have roles on good teams and do not cost a ton. Why not keep them around until you have better options available.

I think Wetzel is a good backup OT. Where I see him struggle is when he has to play OG.

Re: Reddick...your point about his learning curve is spot on. He is going to have to make a huge leap at some point to be able to earn a second contract.

End of the day, I think I end on the belief that our team is poorly coached and while we do need more top end talent, the roster isn't terrible. The most important thing is to get Rosen a good offensive coach and keep him healthy. From that point we need a defensive coordinator who can get the most out of the players we have.

I don't believe Wilks is the guy to do either of those.

3B - Chad Williams is a bust, and needs to go. He do not do anything well enough to be playing in the NFL.

I think Mike Iupati's eventual release next offseason frees up the LG spot. Yet, Justin Pugh is a horrible football player, so I am not sure moving him to LG changes that. Pugh is the new Daryn College or Adam Snyder signing for the Cardinals.

I disagree. Mason Cole and Humphries are two guys to keep. The rest are very replaceable. That being said, I think Pugh hangs around just for his contract not his play. I hope Shipley is not put at guard next year, or is even on the team. The extension the Cardinals gave him was stupid.

Good write up!
come on dude...chad williams is a second year player... the kid is doing fine. he has already more than tripled his production from last season.
not everybody drafted becomes a pro bowler and most never become starters, let alone in their first two seasons.
the kid is on pace for around 35 catches for 300 yds...not spectacular but fine for a second year player who isnt a primary WR...and a noticeable improvement from last season.
if he continues to improve then next year, in his third season...we can expect 60+ catches for 700 yds or so...
fantastic for a WR3
dude wasnt a first round pick for a reason.

antonio Brown didnt become a 100 catch 1500 yd per season guy until his fourth season

HC aside I think we have some decent coaches. IMO their biggest mistake was taking on too many major changes all at once.
McCoys offense was 180 degrees from BA's and to try and transition from 3-4 to 4-3 in a single off season with no GM during the summer was a mistake. with Keim in office we could have filled out the defense with vets as they fell off other teams to younger players or changed schemes. of course...SK's folly could not be foreseen I guess...but may be the caveat that buys the staff another season.

Meh.

The mistake was hiring a garbage OC who you should have known was garbage.

Transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3 wouldn't have been an issue of we had a head coach who knew how to evaluate players and install a scheme DURING the offseason.

Keim is the tough person to move on from. It is easy to fire Wilks under the basis that he is not what you want to develop a young QB and you didn't know ehn you hired him that you would be trading up for a first round QB.

I don't have the time to comb through 31 teams worth of backup swing tackle play, but from my nearly 30 years of watching Cardinals football, Wetzel is easily one of the best swing tackle backups this team has had. Sign the dude to a three year, decent backup caliber deal and you have a guy who can play well at times in a pinch and you don't have to worry about a pretty critical backup position for awhile.
