Here's a first hunch at the 53 man roster -- given the current roster. To be updated as we proceed.

QB (2): Palmer, Stanton
RB (4): Johnson, Williams, Penny, Logan
WR (6): Fitzgerald, Nelson, Smoke, Jaron, Williams, Hogan
TE (3): Gresham, Momah, Niklas
OL(9): Humphries, Iupati, Shipley, Boehm, Veldheer, Wetzel, Toner, Johnson, Holden

NT (2): Peters, Williams
DE (6): Nkemdiche, Mauro, Gunter, Rucker, Pierre, Bevins
ILB (4): Dansby, Bucannon, Reddick, Wright
OLB (4): Golden, Jones, Jarvis, Tre'Von Johnson
CB (5): Peterson, Bethel, Williams, Ford, Shelton
S (5): Mathieu, Bethea, Branch, Baker, Gallon

ST (3): Wile, Brewer, Dawson

PS (10):

QB-Dysert
RB-Summers
TE-Valles or WR Hubert
C-Crowley
T-John or Price
DT-Tasini
LB-Martin or Fua
CB-Bouka or Hayes
S-Drico Johnson
S/CB-Miller or Hartfield

Tough decisions --- last few picks (Hogan, Bevins, Wright, Tre'Von, Gallion) help upgrade STs.

Key Roster Battles:

QB Stanton vs. Dysert (or Gabbert if signed)
WR Hogan vs. Golden, Hubert, Dobson, Ellington
TE: Niklas & Momah vs. Valles
OL: Toner vs. Bergstrom
DE: Bevins vs. Stinton
LB: Wright vs. Gabe Martin and Alani Fua
OLB: Tre'Von Johnson vs. Kareem Martin
CB: Shelton vs. Bouka, Miller, Hayes
S: Gallon vs. Drico Johnson and Trevor Hartfield

What players do you think will surprise?

Unique thing about this rookie class is that so many players have exceptional athletic measurables.

But measurables don't always translate into production (though sometimes they do).

Which means that we have an inusually large number of rookies capable of earning a starting role, but it's way too early to know which guys are contenders and which are pretenders.

Bottom line - I'd rather have too many high potential guys than too few. I'm jacked!

After 1st or second cuts they will sign a rb, dj primary back up

Tigh end group is very weak, I see another signing
I like moamah playing special teams, has lenght and speed to be a pro bowler in that position
Max valles may have a chance to stick cause coaches like him

I see 3 rbs dj, a free agent and tj logan, Ellington could get some duties there in case of need

Miller on ps replaced by gallon
Gallon who?
Miller has a chance to start imo
Branch wont make it even after pay cut

Trevon johnson dont know who he is but I assume is the Udfa u decide to root for this season

@Mitch UDFA are what they are and there is a reason why they went undrafted
There are some expectation and I can see one of them make it, but every season when u predict the 53 u put a lot of the them in the mix
I know is fascinating rooting for the underdogs but ...

Don't see Wright making the 53 over Fua.

Doubt Branch makes the 53 at all.

Would much rather see Harlan make it over Williams. Big fan of Sojourn. Out of these 3, Harlan & Sojourn are my favorites.

I'm pretty confident Harlan Miller is making the final 53. No way half of our UDFA's make it either. If they do that really says something about our current team.

I really like how our OL as a group is shaping up. I am really concerned with our pass rush. If Jones or Golden don't bring their big boy pants every week it could get ugly!

I can see Bevins making the team. Love his tape. Plus we are so weak on the D-Line I think he makes it by default.

Keeping Bevins could represent a "fit" move - We replace the 6-7 Calais Campbell with the 6-6 ( think it's) 285 Bevins.

This team is going to do a lot more tackling in pre-season, which gives every defensive and special teams player on the roster a chance to make it. Tackling has been a problem, not only the consistency of it on defense, but especially all across the board on STs. Having watched tapes of all the UDFAs, it is clear to me that Steve Keim and the scouts zeroed in on good, tough, aggressive tacklers.

Steve Keim went out of his way to mention that he thinks some of the UDFAs have a good chance of making the team, particularly in helping to upgrade the STs.

Every year UDFAs do make their way onto the Cardinals' roster. These signings are not a joke -- they come as the result of a great deal of scouting and a great deal of communication in order to get them to sign with the Cardinals. Steve Keim has a lot invested in these players and he and BA are committed to keeping the best players regardless of whether they were drafted or not.

Have you already dismissed Haason Reddick and Jarvis Jones as factors?

Great work Mitch! I like a lot of what you have here and only a few minor disagreements. Here are my thoughts...

QB - Really hope we dump Stanton and the bloated contract for a younger, more moldable backup. Dysert et al needs to be given every opportunity to challenge for the job. We won't carry three.

RB - Agree with everything here... We have a true bell cow in Humble Rumble Johnson, plus Thunder Penny and Lightening Logan. Just not sure about Kerwynn due to the lack of ST ability. Maybe this is where Summers surprises if he can pick up pass protection quickly.

WR - Love that you have Hogan making the squad. He already tweeted Fitz "teach me." BGolden is totally replaceable on ST, Ellington is a puss, and Dobson has shown very little since being drafted. They need another big body after Larry Legend and "Crush-on" Hogan totally fitz the bill.

TE - After Gresham I'm pretty meh. I think this is one position that could use a Keim time upgrade before camp. We cannot count on Momah or Nicked Glass to stay healthy. Valles or Wroblenski may surprise.

OL - Pretty much agree unless Boehm stays at RG. If he does, then Bergstrom and his experience have a real shot as backup C/G. I don't think Toner, Wetzel, John, Price, or Holden can play the pivot in a pinch. Not to mention, BA is loathe to move guys around during the season unless he's forced to by injury. Hoping Johnson wins RG job and Boehm takes the C job from Shipley, but don't see that happening with BA while Carson is still here. All the others are camp fodder IMO.

DL - Agree with everything. This is the year someone finally beats out Stinson for his roster spot and I believe it's Bevins. My only concern here (and it's a BIG one) is with Calais leaving, will we be able to hold up against the run in obvious run downs with who we have. I have my doubts. This could quite possibly be the linchpin for the entire 2017 season.

LB - This is a fun group! Agree that the roster battle at ILB is between Scoob, Fua, and GMartin. I think Fua gets the nod due to positional versatility and ST prowess. And what do you do if Mr Washington comes home to roost??? Hoping BA and Bettch stop the stubborn experiment of having a perfectly good SS in Deone continue trying to hold up at ILB. See my DL concern above. At OLB, I see KMart making it over any UDFA due to his ST ability and length. He's a nice backup to Mr Jones (not Jarvis) as well.

DB - A few adjustments here... I don't see Branch making the roster. Hasn't been able to stay healthy his entire career. I think Miller takes his spot at S and can also play some outside CB.

At Corner, I think that if Bouka shows anything this offseason given his size, he will make the roster. Shelton also makes it as a super pesky slot CB. They gave him >25% of their UDFA bonus budget, which speaks volumes. Just not confident that BWill can ever get it. Rarely turns his head to find the ball, which is a death sentence in the NFL. That's like trying to teach an inaccurate QB to be accurate... Never works!

ST - Agree! Only battle here might be between Wile and Leone, but I believe NFL experience wins out.

That's all I got fellas, so fire away!!!

The linebacking core sure has gotten deep on this team in just a couple of years. Are you assuming the team moves on from D-Wash, or is that an oversight?

Excellent post, Lagerfilled! Thanks for making so many good points.

* Kerwynn Williams made 4 STs tackles the last 3 weeks of the season. They just need to make sure they don't put him on punt protector duty!

* I think WR Krishaw Hogan is going to turn some heads and the Cardinals won't want to risk putting him on waivers.

* I agree about TE. I am hoping that Ifeanyi Momah can finally stay healthy and that Hakeem Valles, in his 2nd year, steps up if Niklas gets injured again. But there will likely be an addition or two at this position.

* I don't see why we need another center when Shipley and Boehm are 2 of the top 8 guys. Even if Boehm starts at RG, he can still side down to center if need be. Plus, I think Toner could play center in a pinch. UDFA C Lucas Crowley should be on the PS, as well. Signing Bergstrom is likely for injury insurance.

* I think Josh Mauro will do well stopping the run in CC's absence. What we need now is a pass rushing DT. Hopefully, Nkemdiche is one and Rucker finds his form again this year. Mabye Pierre and/or Bevins.

* Even if D-Wash returns, the coaches aren't going to move Deone away from $LB. BA&SK have been saying all off-season that they think Deone is going to have a monster year this year. I juts can't get my head wrapped around D-Wash. Not sure if he's still on the roster after his meeting with BA&SK&MB. I agree that when healthy Alani Fua is an asset, but can he stay on the field? I love Scooby Wright's intensity and have heard that he has been training like mad this off-season. I like Gabe Martin too. But I would still like to see them re-sign Sio Moore. Man, he played great the last two weeks.

* Kareem Martin is in a contract year so he should be highly motivated. The question may come down to, is he or Tre-Von Johnson more valuable on STs? Just was watching Tre-Von Johnson make a number of good hard tackles in the NFLPA All-Star game. It's a fun watch. T.J. Logan runs for over 60 yards (total) in the game. Chad Williams makes a 10 yard catch.

* I agree with you on Bouka -- if he's balling, he's sticking. Plus, he might be in the mix in the return game.

* I do not think the coaches will cut Branch because they need him to cover TEs and taller WRs. Hopefully Branch will be better, faster and more productive this year. Harlan Miller needs to show he can tackle. If he does, I think they will find a way to keep him on the roster.

+1

Even if it's for depth I would like to have him around. Looked like he had some skills. Better than Fua and Martin IMO. Not counting on DWash coming back in football shape

Mitch, how many UDFA's do you have making the final '53'? And how many the PS?

53 Man Roster: 5 (WR Hogan, DE Bevins, LB Tre'Von Johnson, CB Shelton, S Gallon)

PS: 4 (RB Summers, C Crowley, DT Pasini, S Drico Johnson)
