His stats say he is pretty bad defensively.
perhaps he will put forth more effort, but his stats say he has never been an above average defender his whole career.
i Know we all hate shamet, but he is a better defender and shoots the same percentage from 3.
even though I have seen very little of Ross, I find those defensive ratings to be quite accurate for the players I am familiar with, so I mostly trust them.
He has better defensive ratings than Shamet in the playoffs. They've played roughly the same number of playoff games as well so I feel that's a fair comparison as Ross has 41 games, starting in 11, to Shamet's 43, starting 10. He has a better defensive rating and defensive win share and defensive box +/- there. Shamet has been better offensively in the playoffs though.
As I've mentioned and most know, he's been playing in Orlando for the last 7 years. A team going nowhere and lucky to compete for the play-in tournament. He's not going all out on defense. He has the capability and has shown he can be an average defender when it matters. I'll take that over Shamet.
I don't dislike Landry as a lot of fans do. He's overpaid, no doubt about that and he's done a respectable job when he fills in for Booker. Where I don't like him though is as a wing off the bench. He's played best here off the bench as a combo guard doing more playmaking than looking for his own offense. We saw that in the New Orleans series and in the Dallas series. I wish he'd play more like that than as what he does usually. I don't know if that's a Monty issue, Landry issue, or both. I suspect it's both though.
Go ahead and continue bashing a guy for defense played on a last place team surrounded by guys on rookie contracts too. He didn't dog it but he didn't go all out either. I've based my comments on what I've seen of him. Granted I haven't seen a lot but I've seen a handful of games and he's not the type who just stands around like a cone.
For anyone interested, heres a comparison of Shamet and Ross' stats, both regular and advanced stats.
