On the way to work Friday morning, caught the morning show on 860 KMVP--

what used to be ESPN national show I guess is now a local show hosted by Paul Calvisi and John Moore--

for out of towners, Calvisi is the game Sideline reporter for games, does Cardinals radio shows, etc. Moore does game announcing in the stadium and does Cardinal talk after the game

The topic Friday morning? the possibility of Pete Carrol coming to coach the Cards.

When two guys employed by the team, on the teams flagship station are openly discussing potential new coaches, and Pete Carrol in particular -- that tells me that Denny is done no matter what (hardly news there) and that there might be some substance to the Carrol rumours.

^^What Espo said.

They're reportedly going to 24 hours of local sports talk. If they follow through, and the shows wind up being worth a damn, they'll blow KDUS and Xtra right out of the water.

I didn't hear that they are going all local. I thought they were going to keep Dan Patrick but I could be wrong.

Phoenix media in general is just terrible right now. Print, TV, radio. It all blows. Nothing is locally owned any more, and it shows.

The local brain trust, such as it is, gathers on Ch. 12 on Sunday nights. What an utter collection of chumps that is. Ch. 10 is no better with LaCava, now the elder statesman of Phoenix sportscasters only because his competition all retired, died, or were magically appointed news anchors instead. (Which says something about the quality of the news as well.)

There is no one - no one - on local sports radio who is qualified to be there. Anybody can host call-in and argue with callers, or let them rant and then tell them "hey, good job". Calvisi's AM sportscast on KTAR is babble punctuated by sound effects.

I'll listen to ESPN radio on the web, if their shows are going to be replaced by locals.

I respect your opinion but how exactly could the radio side be made better? I'm interested in how people feel it could be better. I agree with the local tv stuff though it's difficult to watch.

Problem #1 is that call-in needs to simply go away. It accomplishes nothing. When the first all-sports station went on the air (KGME 1360 in the mid 90's), they had a noontime call-in show for trivia such as "name the 1968 NL All Star Team" which was very entertaining. John Cannon was the host, I think? Don't know what happened to him, he was a great host. very knowledgeable.

That's Problem #2 - most of the people on the radio now simply are not qualified. They don't know their history, don't have any perspective, can't see the big picture. The ex-jocks that work in this market were marginal players at best, and seem more interested in playing the fool than in being journalists. I mean - Ron Wolfley? Manucci? Come on. They make me wish for John Mistler. (And I hated Mistler.)

And the bigger picture (Problem #3) is that the relationship between the teams and the media here is fundamentally screwed up. The media has no credibility, so the teams don't treat them with any respect. As a result, the coverage is weak and whiny. Which makes the teams less likely to talk to them. Etc. When the "Leinart will start" stories broke, who broke them? ESPN. The locals had to cite Chris Mortenson as their source. That's just pathetic.

In the days when Colangelo ran everything, you either stroked his ego or you didn't survive here. (You still see this in the writings of his personal towel-boy, Mr. Bickley.) Due to that, we've never really had any first-class sportswriters here. Someone who can get inside the Cardinals or Coyotes and figure out just what in hell they are thinking from day to day. Everybody seems satisfied with the present relationships, which are really no relationships at all.

For examples of what local talk can be, go to ESPN's site and check out the podcasts of local shows on the ESPN-owned stations in Chicago, Pittsburgh, etc.

Not to mention the fact that the local people in charge seem to have no damn clue what a majority of their demographic is.

Let's estimate for a second, the age demographic of people listening to sports talk radio. Chances are, most of them are between the age of 18 and 35. We'll expand it slightly more and put a handful of 40 and older guys on that list as well.

With that in mind, exactly how many of them give a rats ass about golf (there were THREE golf shows running recently, which is about two too many), hunting and outdoors and a handicapping show. They also run shows about greyhound racing, and almost seem like anyone that's willing to shell out the cash can get a show on the air.

I'll promise you... No.. GUARANTEE you that any number of us could formulate a show idea and it'd blow most of the actual shows on the air now right out of the water.

As Fan also mentioned, the relationship between most of the locals and the teams is as virtually non-existant as the show-caller interaction on most of these shows.

The problem is the local teams want good coverage not critical coverage. As for caller interaction its not the main thing a show needs. If you hear "caller drive radio" that is code word for " I didn't prepare and have no real topics so we are going to let the fans call in". That isn't quality radio. Quality radio is a balanced mix between intelligent commentary, great timely informative interviews and solid caller interaction. That is the equation but none of the shows follow that as of right now in the valley. It also takes solid personalities that interact well together.

Calvisi & Lombardi were awesome a few yrs ago, the biggest problem is the stations bringing in host from out of state like Gambo who thinks that we care about NY? Ashe grew up here but lacks knowledge about the history of the local sports scene.

The problem is Radio just doesn't make much money anymore. Radio stations will do anything to bring in money, hence the greyhound show. Also, because they have no money, they need to cut cost, and that includes the pay of their show hosts. Low pay = low quality. Simple as that.

If you come up with a good idea for a radio show, you'll need to have somekind of matching sponsor. A good idea without a show sponsor will just stay a good idea. The show needs a tie-in so it can make money for the radio station.

Then why do we have THREE all-sports stations now? And why are KTAR's owners shuffling their stations around to put all-sports on KTAR, a 50,000 watt clear-channel station? There is clearly a demand. I don't mind if they buy programming for golf and fishing and whatever. There are 168 hours in the week and it's all got to be filled somehow.

It's clearly better for listeners, and worth real money to the advertisers and the stations themselves, if they could create some programming that is actually worth listening to. I just don't plan my day around wondering when Joe from Glendale is going to call in.
