Ya, wasn't saying you thought that personally.

I agree there is almost no bad publicity. Subway Jared's surprise news stories are an outlier, jury is still out on Jesse Smolette. :D
Not anymore. That saying is outdated and doesn't apply like it used to. Cancel culture in the age of social media has seen to that.

I really wonder how little control over their lives people have whom, by default, jump towards conspiracies in their lizard brains.

Exactly. I was about to use a few examples as well.. lol. It takes quite the ish show for it to destroy ya nowadays. Bro Jogan grew his audience. Whatever generates the clicks. ;)

I sometimes wonder the opposite. How much control do people who believe they have it, actually have?

That is exactly why certain types of people have such a strong belief in conspiracy theories - it gives them a psychological crutch on which to blame all of the shortcomings of themselves and their lives. Conspiracies allow them to rationalize that their personal failings and flaws (and/or the failings of their deeply held beliefs) exist only because some more powerful yet nebulous forces are united against them. They are the perfect panacea for those who lack self-awareness, introspection, or a sense of personal responsibility.

Will "What A Swell Guy" Smith was asked to leave the awards ceremony but refused.....

But, but… it was staged! Even though when cameras weren’t rolling during commercials everyone was doing damage control and the above happened.

That was really a grotesque moment of violence for the world to see… only to be followed up by just as grotesque applause and standing O for the man after he won best actor.

Our society is fraying everywhere. And it seems that any side will grant permission of terrible behavior… as long as it’s THEIR SIDE who did it.

Sucks.

I think they're just the yin to the 'people who believe everything they're told' yang... What are we left with? Gray area.

And some psychological evidence suggests that people are drawn to conspiracy theories when they do feel uncertain either in specific situations or more generally. And there are other epistemic reasons why people believe in conspiracy theories as well in relation to this sort of need for knowledge and certainty. So people with lower levels of education tend to be drawn to conspiracy theories. And we don't argue that's because people are not intelligent. It's simply that they haven't been allowed to have, or haven't been given access to the tools to allow them to differentiate between good sources and bad sources or credible sources and non-credible sources. So they're looking for that knowledge and certainty, but not necessarily looking in the right places.

The second set of motives, we would call existential motives. And really they just refer to people's needs to be or to feel safe and secure in the world that they live in. And also to feel that they have some kind of power or autonomy over the things that happen to them as well. So again, when something happens, people don't like to feel powerless. They don't like to feel out of control. And so reaching to conspiracy theories might, I guess, at least allow people to feel that they have information that at least explains why they don't have any control over this situation. Research has shown that people who do feel powerless and disillusioned do tend to gravitate more towards conspiracy theories.

The final set of motives we would call social motives and those refer to people's desire to feel good about themselves as individuals and also feel good about themselves in terms of the groups that they belong to. And I guess at the individual level, people like to feel... Well, they like to have high self-esteem. They like to feel good about themselves. And potentially one way of doing that is to feel that you have access to information that other people don't necessarily have.

And this is quite a common rhetorical tool that people use when they talk about conspiracy theories, that everybody else is some kind of sheep, but that they know the truth. They have the truth. And having that kind of belief, I guess, feeling that you're in possession of information that other people don't have, can give you a feeling of superiority over others. And we have found, and others have shown as well that a need for uniqueness and a need to have, I guess, stand out from others is associated with belief in conspiracy theories.

That leave the question "why did he have a choice?" Security should have been on him and escorting him out. It sounds like some of the people there are wondering the same thing.

Yesterday Wanda Sykes said that Rock apologized to her for causing something that overshadowed her night. She then said:
And for them to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this? This is just the wrong message.’

You assault somebody you get escorted out of the building and that's it. But for them to let him continue I thought it was gross.
I'm with her on that. It was gross.

To not only do what he did, but then refuse to leave AND then defend himself as “protector” and “vessel of love” after is such a ridiculous triple whammy of crappy-ness, I think the Academy would be well within its right to revoke the Oscar and expel him for at least a couple years.

And again, if y’all believe this convo is what Will Smith WANTED on the biggest night of his career, which has been circling the drain with poor box office showing after poor box office showing (outside of a reviled Suicide squad) for over a decade, I have some Oceanfront property in Yuma to sell you. Great price!

Yeah, if you pay attention, you can hear Rock kind of mutter after Will Smith yelled at him something that sounds like "Oh, I could say a lot more..." His voice kind of trails off, but it seemed like he was resisting launching something more scathing and just decided to de-escalate the situation.
I 100% think Chris wanted to go even harder and bit his tongue

I have been processing this since it happened. Not only do I think he should get suspended but there is a chance he gets blackballed from some studios. I have been a big fan of his since his music days but I lost so much damn respect for him. If Smith never gets another part again in Hollywood I wouldn't cry over it. If he gets expelled from the Academy I wouldn't cry over it either. If he gets sued by Chris Rock for a couple hundred million I wouldn't cry over it.

Having said all that? I still whole heartedly believe "don't start nothing, won't be nothing" applied here. Chris Rock knew he was out of line and likely stepping over the line to be an "edgy comic". He deserves some of the blame. If he comes out and tried to play he didn't know about Jada's condition? I am going to roast him because she has been ALL OVER social media about it for the past couple years and Chris is very active on social media.

Not only this, but all his bald jokes at Uncle Phil in his show. Just would be strange to have such high levels of hypocrite in ya...

Looks like the LAPD was ALSO in on the bit, ready to arrest Smith If Rock gave the green light.

Incredible how vast this conspiracy was to… uh… hopefully give the Oscars a tiny ratings bump late in the show and Will Smith, willingly destroying his reputation on a night that should have been the greatest of his career.

Disagree with your blame shifting. How about, "If you hadn't gone down to the corner store to buy some bread that drunk never would have hit your car," or "If that guy hadn't cut me off in traffic, I wouldn't have shot him."

Back to the obvious...... Rock, like Rickles and a dozen others, and are edgy comedians.... that's what they do. Did his joke go over the line? Absolutely debatable. Did Smith immediately react? Nope. He laughed looked over at his wife, thought about it while walking up and then committed assault and battery on an international stage with hundreds of millions of witnesses. No one made him respond in that way. He wasn't defending his wife.... she was in no danger. It was entirely his choice, and a very bad one at that. Rock bears absolutely no responsibility in Smith's actions. Again, if it had been "THE" Rock instead of Chris Rock, it simply would not have happened. Smith is simply a Richard.

Do you think Chris Rock… follows Jada’s social media? I’m all over social media and never heard a word about this. The idea that he knew this doesn’t hold water to me. She doesn’t have afagia like Bruce Willis that was plastered all over the front page of every entertainment and non entertainment site.

I have no clue what you are talking about. I am blame shifting NOTHING. I applied blame to both parties. That is not blame shifting. Blame shifting is when I transfer blame to someone whose actions played no part in what happened. That is not the case. Comparing to an innocent victim in a drunk driven incident is beyond dramatic and not remotely the same thing.

I am not defending Will at all. Stop acting like I am. I do however disagree with you excusing Chris. Comedians make jokes all the time. It's cool to make fun of a bombed movie. It's cool to make fun of something bone headed they did. It's not cool in any way shape or form to make fun of a medical condition. To say Rock bears no responsibility is you doing the "blame shifting" not me. Does that mean Will had a right to slap Chris? 100% no. Words shouldn't have led to violence. You don't have to excuse one party just because the other party did something worse.

I do. These celebrities follow each other on Social Media. Not to mention, comedians like Chris follow the people they love to target. Chris could have immediately quashed all of this and said he didn't know but even if he does I doubt that is true. Oh and yes....I did hear about her condition some time back on Twitter. Look, I don't think Chris was "out to get her" or really trying to be overtly vicious. Now if he didn't know? Well...that makes it sort of better but still doesn't absolve him 100% of what happened. Ignorance is nine tenths of the law. Just because you don't know something doesn't absolve you of all responsibility. It just means I can sympathize with him a bit more where I can't with Will.....at all.
