Just listened to what should have been the final out as I drove home, but the ump called the runner safe...

Robbed of a perfect game from all I've heard.

Has anyone seen it yet?

I was watching it live on the MLB network. Live it looked like a bad call, but in replays it looked horrendous. The throw clearly beat the runner. Not even close.

How could he call him safe? He has to be 100% sure he was safe in that situation and unless he was drunk, I don't know what he was seeing. Even Jason Donald thought he was out and seemed sorry he was called safe. Jim Joyce should be booed for the rest of the year. That would of been the 3rd perfect game of the year and that has never happened.

MLB needs some sort of replay. That call was horrendous! Can the Tigers dispute the call in any way?

Horrible call, feel bad for Galarraga...he won't have that chance again. But I'll give the ump credit...he manned up and took complete responsibility for the bad call and said he realized he took it away from the kid and felt horrible and it was the most important call of his life and he screwed it up.

In a regular game with nothing at stake that would be unbelievable.

Just watched the replay on ESPN and he was out by a whole step.

Something's up, that ump had to have it in for the pitcher.

With that play representing the final out, and with TV replay to back it up, you'd think the Commissioner's office could step in, reverse the call and honor the perfect game.

Sort of like the NBA undoing a flagrant foul after a game.

Wow. I just saw the highlight. That could possibly go down as the worst call in baseball history.

I was just talking with a colleague about how if it doesn't get overturned, the upside is that this perfect game is going to go down as one of the more famous ones...

I think it should be reversed, but I really hope it doesn't set a precedent for the MLB to step in any time anyone cries about a call. Baseball is slow enough as it is.

Just to play devil's advocate. What if the Indians had rallied and won the game? Then would it be right for the league to reverse the call?

I don't think there is any way the league will reverse the call. This may jumpstart a move to replay but reversing the call opens a can of worms.

I was thinking, this is exactly the kind of thing they like to create a display for at Cooperstown. This "almost" perfect game may end up being more famous than if the ump had just made the correct call, especially if it motivates MLB to adopt a more inclusive replay system.

+1

And I am glad they didn't reverse the call. Refs are part of the game.

I guarantee there have been "perfect games" with calls that went for the pitcher.

It was a bad call. It happens. It is sports. I think it sets a bad example if the call is reversed. The umps have to be respected.

Any outrage about the call should be given to the league for not having instant replay set up. Get with the times.

I am sure there are many who are now screaming for this umps head, that also complain that instant replay degrades the integrity of the game.

My question is that official scorers can change a hit to a error or a error to a hit after the game is over. At the very least, why not give someone a error on the play and give him a no hitter.

Because there was no error. There was a mental error but no fielding error.

Yeah, but this is about the game ending play of a perfect game. The fact is the batter was out.

It's not about "any time anyone cries about a call".

As mentioned earlier, just as an official scorer changing a call after the game.

Baseball is both a sport and a revenue producing business providing entertainment to millions of fans.

If Mick Jagger were not pleased with a song during a concert, he'd probably stop the band, apologize to the audience and start again.

Rather than wait 'til he got to the end, apologize and let it be.

Baseball is indeed a form of entertainment, as is a concert.

The human touch out of the Commissioner's office would be welcomed.

How many times have they given a player a error was their clearly was not one? Sutton and Grace talked about how the official scorers tend to treat the home players better.
