Great poems have been written describing life’s winter slumber. In eloquent words they color the hibernation of life waiting to spring forth with a new season’s thaw. Here in the land of the Cardinals we experience such a pause. It is hot outside and we stay indoors and near the comfort of artificial cooling. The memories of a Championship won in January linger amidst the 110+ degree days, but we are waiting for the turn of the seasons. The season we wait for is not the poet’s familiar Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall. No, we are waiting for Football Season, more specifically: Cardinal Season. We cling to the vision of a field of green dotted with red and white. In the background, the San Francisco Peaks will loom with the threat of thunderstorms hanging ever near. This is training camp for the Cardinal faithful. We wait in expectation of the crisp, cool nights and the bright sunny days of Flagstaff. The season for which we wait will still be more than a month over the horizon, but like a robin in Spring, or the turn of leaves in the Fall, Flagstaff tells us our season is coming. OUR season is coming Cardinal fans. On September 13th, on our home field, the seasons will turn. This is OUR season. This is OUR time. We are forged like steel by the hot summer days and when OUR time comes, WE will be ready. We Do This Together.
