A Stopgap At PG

I'm convinced the Suns are going to be looking to pick up a PG by next season, possibly even using the Atlanta pick. This doesn't solve the problem the Suns have this year.

One guy I've been thinking about is Darrell Armstrong. He is long long past his prime and has never been much of a shooter, but I think he might be better than some inexperienced guys for this season's push.

Tireless defender... Brings intensity on both ends... Has remarkable athletic skills... Great quickness... Huge leaper... Has three-point shooting range... Makes no mistake from the charity stripe... Not a great vision of the court... Should improve decision-making... A leader.

His main problem is his shooting, but for short minutes that may be less of an issue as long as the Suns have shooters on the floor. His defense seemed to be pretty good in the periods I saw him play. Has he completely lost his skills or is he another victim of the Avery Johnson style?

He's a little older than Lindsay Hunter, but is a similar type of player.

I wouldn't mind Armstrong but I'd have much preferred getting Lindsey ... he is a better defender and can bother a much wider variety of opponents. Statwise he has 50% more assists and steals, too. It would be interesting to know how they compared on turn overs... I don't think either one is bad in that category.

George, there's a couple of problems with your analysis. One is Lindsey Hunter re-signed with Dtroit. The Suns offered him a deal, however he stated he wanted to end his career in Detroit, so he re-signed with them. Second, Dallas isn't about to help out a division rival, by trading a PG to the Suns to help the wear and tear on Nash.

As far as the FT shooting goes, you just didn't check enough stats - they are both 80% career from the FT line. That 50% mark for Hunter was based on just 4 free throws. Tsk, tsk, George.

Turnovers favor Hunter, too... 2.4 / 48 minutes as opposed to 3.84/48 for Darrell (career stats).

Second, Dallas isn't about to help out a division rival, by trading a PG to the Suns to help the wear and tear on Nash.

Armstrong is a UFA, so Dallas doesnt need to trade us anything.

And there is no way Armstrong makes more than $2Mil per, and even that might be pushing it cause i can see him excepting the Vet Min.

So if we want him, we could probably get him.

I would sign him, just cause its better than nothing.

I mentioned Armstrong before the draft, but nobody replied to it. The thing about Armstrong is that he's pretty old, but he does a great job just being a pest on the floor. He has some old legs, but he still has some speed on defense in the half-court. Defensively, he can cause other teams problems. Not so sure how he would do running our offense, but there is definitely some good things about him.

Armstrong is staying with the Mavs to eventually become an assistant coach or so.
