It was cruel what the Chargers did to Eli Manning in the NFL draft. To subject him to the booing of the crowd at the NFL draft was mean-spirited and unnecessary. They easily could have executed the trade with the Giants prior to the start of the draft, giving New York the first choice and still preserving Phillip Rivers as their future quarterback.

Instead, they held onto the No. 1 pick and used it as payback to the Manning family, which had told San Diego that Eli would not play in their city. They took Eli, who then had to stand on stage next to commissioner Paul Tagliabue and absorb the sad reaction of the fans.

No wonder Manning didn't want to be a Charger.

Each side declared happiness over the ultimate maneuvering atop the draft. The Giants drooled over Manning for weeks, respecting both his ability and his bloodline. The Chargers never were convinced he was worth the first choice, and keeping him would have been foolish. Instead, they now have extra picks, which should translate into badly needed additional talent for a woeful franchise. Manning will become an elite player in the NFL, which will make the Giants' proactive decision to obtain him a very wise move. He has the physical talent to be a success. More important, his low-key personality will allow him to withstand the caldron that surrounds every pro quarterback in New York. This draft won't be nearly as memorable for the Chargers. Rivers will sign a contract far exceeding the worth of his talents. But at least he should be an improvement on current starter Drew Brees.

I agree with everything SD did. They won. And the Mannings were exposed. If they did it another way maybe they don't get as much as they did. NONE of this would have happened if not for the Manning's actions. They did it to themselves!

I remember when Steve Francis was raked over the coals by the media when he refused to play for the Grizzlies. But a lot of the media is bending over backwards to make the Mannings look good in this. Gees I wonder what the difference is?

It's a nasty little doublestandard isn't it.

OMG, the Mannings acted spoiled and greedy... They got what they deserved, but I wish he HAD to sit out a year like he threatened...

What?
Do you really believe this azdad? or are you just posting links?

Screw eli and the entire manning family. If the Chargers played them for fools and got the giants to pay the price.....Good for them.

I hope eli pulls a leaf. He is such a primodonna pansy. Maybe he will be the next Boz. That would even be better.

I can't even begin to explain the disrespect I have for the Mannings. That cry baby whines about going number 1 in the freakin' draft!!!???!!!!! @#ck him! As far as the Chargers are concerned...Pats on the back to them. If you let these unsubstantiated rookies start calling the shots, then all is lost. The Chargers showed him that he is not bigger than this league, and that humble is better than outspoken. Oh, by the way, when was the last time a Manning has won anything? I'd take a quiet, efficient Tom Brady and a Super Bowl over a Manning any day of the week!

I can't believe this article is defending the Mannings. Eli and his family showed a total lack of respect for the NFL, the draft process and set a poor example.

I don't think the Mannings are bad people. Not by any means. It just showed a total lack of class that will tarnish their reputation for a long time.

On another note, am I the only one who thought that Manning didn't even look happy after NY got him? Seemed like he didn't even want to be there.

If Eli is going to make it as a Qb in the NFL I am sure that he can take a crowd booing him - I am sure he expected it.
There are so many players that just wish they could get a shot in the NFL - they would have been happy anywhere... just to get picked, sad when ppl can't see what they have and appreciate it.

Bozworth, like Wadsworth, lost his career to injury. Ryan Leaf was a head case who was too immature to handle the mental aspects of professional sports. Whenever you slam him, think about this, Ryan Leaf is a laughing-stock in our society. Everytime he meets a new person, in the back of their mind, they will think of him as the wasted pick from San Diego. Regardless of the money he made, I wouldn't trade places with him for anything.

Eli has a very tough road ahead of him in NY. I think he has the support system in place to be successful, but the pressure on him has certainly been elevated.

Personally, I find San Diego's actions to release the Mannings statement to the public (that he didn't want to play for them) was the most classless act I've ever seen from an NFL organization. They knew that he would be subject to intese ridicule, possibly for years to come. Elway and Bo Jackson got away with it, but there wasn't nearly the media attention on the NFL draft back then that exists today.

This doesnt make sense. How could the chargers trade their pick and be guarenteed Rivers? Oakland or AZ could have taken him or traded down to a team that takes him.

Essentially the chargers HAD to take Manning so they had him to trade.

I personally think the Chargers made the right move by taking Manning, waiting for the Giants to select Rivers, and then trading the players. There was no guarantee that Philip Rivers would be selected 4th (maybe he was picked by the Raiders) so San Diego let the draft play out and then traded players and received many picks in return.

Besides, if New York didn't have the player they wanted, they could have held onto Manning and traded him elsewhere. Bottom line is that the Chargers drafted a player in demand and knew they would move him to another team.

Chargers did the correct thing.

Chargers did the correct thing and screw poor Eli Manning. The Giants were waiting to call the Chargers bluff. The Giants thought the Chargers would pass on Manning and they would not have to give up anything to get him with the fourth pick if the Raiders did not grab him. Everyone knew the Cardinals were taking Fitzgerald.

The Chargers came out and said Manning was their guy and they intended on working out a deal with him. The Giants were going to take Gallery and the trade would of never happened. Once Gallery was taken by the Raiders the Giants grabbed the second rated QB on their board. Then the trade talk started between the Giants and the Chargers.

I personally think the Giants gave up too much for Manning. In the end both teams got what they wanted. That is how it is supposed to work in the NFL. Teams make the call, not some spoiled SOB who thinks he is bigger than the game and has not played a down.

I can't remember going into my first job interview and telling them "I'll take the job but only in Tucson, Arizona."

On the flip side you had Rivers just happy as can be to be drafted and stating he did not control where he would eventually end up but would be happy to play anywhere.

I lost all respect for Archie Manning and Eli Manning. I hope Eli Manning is the biggest bust of all time. I thought it was great he got booed everytime they showed his face. They are an example of everything that is wrong
with professional athletes today.

From what I had heard from Chris Mortenson on ESPN on several different shows (Pardon the Interruption, Outside the Lines, and SportsCenter), Chris and several other reporters had questioned the San Diego Chargers front office when the story originally broke. At the time, the Mannings hadn't said anything to SD directly, it was just word spreading fast. When questioned, SD front office said "No, Manning has not told us he does not want us to draft him."

Then, Manning really did confirm to them that he had no intention of playing for them. At this point the Chargers had a choice to make. Sell out Manning by telling the media what he said, or keep their mouths shut and look like liars to all the media types that had called and questioned them.

Not exactly an enviable position to be in. If it was the local SD beat reporter, I could see. But burning your bridges at ESPN isn't exactly a good thing for a franchise trying to rebuild itself. So San Diego was stuck between a rock and hard place.

Let us ponder for a moment why. Because of the actions of the Mannning family.

One classless act deserves another. And feeling bad for the Mannings at this point is total wasted effort. He got everything he wanted, and all he had to do was get booed by a bunch of San Diego fans, SOMETHING THE ACTUAL CHARGES TEAM GETS 8 SUNDAY'S A YEAR.

If you want to shed a tear, shed it for Phillip Rivers man, he's the one that got dicked, and he handled it rather well.

I really hope Rivers finds success in SD. He is far more deserving of it for what HE has gone through. Imagine being on National television being asked how great it is to be drafted by the Giants when you know you're not going to play for them, but rather shipped off to accomodate the NFL's new golden boy.

Rivers got dicked? he's not supposed to be drafted till maybe 7-11 and he got drafted 4th and his salary and signing bonus increased, in my opinion he didn't got dicked.

He got dicked in the sense he had a bunch of cameras in his faced being asked to respond to the whole situation, when it was clear, neither SD, NY, nor the NFL had not said anything to him.

He was flying blind, and being used to appease a crybaby. That's how he got dicked.

If it was bad for Eli standing up there. How was it not uncomfortable for Rivers?

Edit: Oh and another thing. If the "He'll get more money from endorsments" argument works for Eli in NY over SD, then it works for EVERYONE. Including Rivers. So in the long run I am willing to bet being shipped to SD makes Rivers less money.

Eli Manning

I have no respect for Eli Manning. I am rooting for him to fail now, because he has no class. I've lost respect for Archie Manning, too. Peyton did not have much to do with it, so I will still keep a modicrum of respect for the Colt, but thats as forgiving as I can be for trying to screw with the NFL draft. I'm glad the Chargers got as much as they did!

What I fear, is now MANY other players will announce who they DONT wanna play for.

Instead of honoring the system, things may change now...

SD had to take Manning for a couple reasons.

First, because no player should have the final say to where he goes. That is not what the draft is about. The draft is set up so that the league can remain competetive. No player should be able to dictate the terms of their draft position by naming the teams. Good for SD for standing up and taking Manning and showing who is really in charge.

Second, SD was losing leverage in trading out of their spot. I am sure the Giants were putting pressure on SD saying that there is no point in taking Eli and here is our offer (probably less than what the Giants actually end giving up). By taking Eli, the Giants had to be serious about ponying up an offer that SD would refuse. SD had to take Eli to maintain leverage in the negotiations.

Now, I did not like the fact that the Eli had to stand up and get boo'ed on what should have been his most memorable day. However, there are consequences to our actions. He got the consequences for trying to dictate to whom he is drafted. The fans know that, the teams know that, now, hopefully, the draftee's know that. Maybe in the future we will not have anything like this happen again. JMO

My take is very different than you. I think Manning and his father smacked the chargers and their players in the face. One charger lineman was on TV and said after they drafted Manning he would not be very welcome in their lockeroom and I cannot blame them. How are lousy teams going to ever get better if the very good players refuse to play for them? We have had a problem of that sort. Manning should have accepted the challenge and stepped up and helped them become a contender. He sure has him sel fin a pressure cooker now and better produce after all the Giants gave up. I have always liked Manning but watching him and his father on TV you sure know who is running this show. He is just a kid. He will get his $40 mil but I have just a little less respect for Archie now.

I agree with all of you on Eli, and I hope he has a rough time, but as a father, I feel for Archie. Most of us will do whatever we think is right for our kid, even if we would not have done it ourselves. He was a nervous wreck yesterday, and I think it showed his lack of comfort with the situation.

This is amazing.

Most classless move by an organization as I have seen in a while.

Obviously most of you forget that it was the Mannings who went and talked to the Chargers, and afetr that talk asked them PRIVATELY if they would trade the pick to the Giants so Eli could play there. Now in this situation, keeps this in mind.
1-The Chargers had been trying to deal the pick for the past 2 months.
2-Even when considering staying and picking at 1, the Chargers never commited to one player.
3-Marty will be fired by the end of next year because of a lack of immediate help. So the QB in San Diego will have to learn 2 offenses in 2 years.

If you were a person of influence, how could you not ask the Chargers, A TEAM WITH NO COMMITED DECISION TO GO WITH ELI, to make a trade that they had already considered making?

Now we get to the classless organization. What does the San Diego Chargers do instead of making the deal without leaking the info. The Chargers tell the press about the situation so that if they screw up the first round, they are not held accountable. They get justification from the media for not drafting or keeping Eli Manning.

On draft day, instead of making the trade at the 1 spot. They draft Manning allow him to go on stage and be booed, as well as creating uncertainty for Rivers who gets picked by the Giants and then is traded.

San Diego is a joke. They have no class in how they do business, and appartently are more concerened with settling scores and avoiding media critique than being successful. If you liked Rivers so much, or knew that you were going to deal with the Giants, do it and don't make a scene. That's why I like it when players flip the ball to the ref. act like you have been there before.

Instead of taking Rivers right away they got an extra 3rd this year and the a 1st and 5th next year. SD did the right thing. They got something for their first pick. Manning got what he deserved. He should not have tried to orchastrate his draft position.
