Some of the Marion trades have been amusing. Others have been beyond laughable. I am not among those opposed to trading Marion, but I suggest a reminder slogan be put at the top of the board:

DENNIS JOHNSON FOR 40-YEAR-OLD RICK ROBEY.

That was straight up. No cash. Probably not even a night with a Boston hooker.

I guess it's funny now, but I wasn't laughing then, especially when my dad explained to me who Rick Robey was and how he was such a stud back when HE was in school. When he arrived, I thought he was a new assistant coach who dressed up in warmups.

So before you go trading Marion for a drumstick and a lotto ticket, think about one of the worst trades in American sports history.

Yes, the DJ for Robey trade was a real clunker. At least DJ was nearing the end of his career and the Suns got some use out of him. However, I remember he still played well after the Suns traded him.The Suns wanted Robey in their eternal quest for a center.

However, I believe the Antonio McDyess trade with Denver is the worst trade fiasco I can recall. Talk about the Suns geting burned... having the other team getting to eat the cake and having it too. But they got theirs as Antonio got injured and was eventually traded. :D He never was the same player after his brief stint in Phoenix.

In regard to Shawn, by all means let's keep him... but never say never. Virtually no player is untouchable if the right trade comes along. But please, no more Rick Robey's.

Well, actually Robey wasn't 40, he just played as if he was 40. And it wasn't straight up ... we also gave Boston a 1st round pick.

We didn't get a Boston Hooker either, and eventually had to settle for dinner with Adrian Zmed.

What's worse than your awful joke is the fact that I got the joke without even looking it up.:(

The Celtics of the 80's were built around some of the most one sided deals in the history of the NBA. Besides the DJ trade, they also traded the #1 and #13 picks in the 1980 draft for the Bernard Parrish and and #3 pick from the Warriors. The #1 pick was used for Joe Barry Carroll and the #13 pick was used for a useless player named Ricky Brown.

Parrish would be an outstanding center while Joe Barry Carroll was the Eddy Curry of his era. The Celtics used the #3 pick to take Kevin McHale.

Bernard?

Do you mean Robert "Smokie" Parish?

I lived in Boston for a year. Every time I told anybody I was a Suns fan they had to tell the entire Robie/DJ trade story right on the spot.

Supposedly Red Aurbauch called a press conference.

Red: We've just traded Rick Robie for Dennis Johnson

Reporter: Where any other playerts involved?

Red: a first round pick (Red lights a cigar) THEIRS

And the room bursts into laughter

I must of heard 25 versions of this story. This really was a key trade that brought the Celtics 3 championships. Didn't Jerry make this trade?

Dennis Johnson was given away because Coach John MacLeod couldn't handle free-thinking players -- y'know, the kind who win Championships.

D.J. won one in Seattle before coming to the Suns, then helped Boston get back on top, after leaving.

We also got rid of Maurice Lucas -- same reason. (He had been part of an NBA championship in Portland.)

As I've posted before, the Suns starting unit of D.J. and Walter Davis in the backcourt, Larry Nance (the first of the 6'10" Small Forwards), and prototype Power Forward Mo Lucas was four-fifths of a dynasty lineup.

And Suns management gave it away. It was a shame.

The only good thing about Rick Robey was that MacLeod played him at Forward. And, as we all know, Suns Power Forwards play Center here.

At lease we had a Center playing Center (as a Power Forward). Unfortunately, a third-string Center.

For once I agree with you. That was a great lineup, and MacLeod was primarily responsible for letting it go.

That said, Lucas was past his prime when he was let go, and the team had already fallen back because of the DJ trade.
