At the "Football for Women" clinic, my wife, who goes to all the practices with me and is recognized by most of the players, pulled aside a defensive lineman we know fairly well and asked him to comment on what he and the defense thought of that 3 man rush with the soft zone behind it.

Answer:

"I hate it. We all hate it. If I was coach we'd never run it."

I never shared that because I thought the player had told my wife that 'off the record." He didn't and it wasn't.

Is everything
Of course the players hate that 3 man rush. The only people who like it are our opponents. Not only do we get absolustely no pressue on the QB, it allows more guys to run routes since the TE and RB's don't have to stay back and block. Horrid.

I was going to suggest since we cannot get pressure anyhow, when it is third and ten drop 10 and rush 1.

Is the " 3 man rush w/ the soft zone" the same defensive scheme that they utilized in preseason?

How about asking that defensive lineman if they are coached to beat the blocker?

It hasn't happened in four games, maybe they think they are just supposed to dance with the opposing o-line.

It's not like there's nobody else out there who gets pressure on the QB from four and even three man fronts. So? Get pissed off and beat the guy anyhow. Hit 'em in the frickin' Adam's Apple or 'Nads if that's what it takes to get around them.

Sheesh!

Yeah, the scheme sucks, but get damn hits and sacks in the backfield anyways. If you blame it on the scheme, you really are admitting you aren't good enough to beat the guy across from you.

Actually I wonder at times if that doesn't have something to do with coaching also. I mean everyone at our lineman seems to be trying to push his man over instead of using any sort of move to get around them. That includes the blitzing linebackers.

What?
Isn't this a perfect time for a defensive meeting where everyone gets to air their opinions without recourse from the suits? Sounds to me like a management system that the employees are not happy with and as a result not sold on and as a further result not puting a 100% effort into.

I have been there and lived it in business. It sucks. And it never not sucks because no one is willing to try it anymore.

I can just hear the D's reaction everytime that play was called.

Capt.- O.K. guys we got em at 3rd and 15! We've got their a**ses nailed to the cross now!

Players- He** yeah! keep the pressure on! We own em!

Capt.- Alright, Zone hoo-ahh a**kicker. (Whenever an exec. comes up with something stupid they give it some hyper name to "rally" the troops.)

Players- Geezus! You have got to be kidding me!

Capt.- Hey! Do your job and we will be fine! I want full effort on this one! Who's with me!?

Players- We're with ya man! Hoo-ahh!

Capt.- Let's do it!

Players under breath- yeah right.

Result- 17 yard completion on a soft zone. Capt. and Players look at Marmie like he's a dork and wonder when this stupid play will be eliminated forever.

Next series- Repeat as needed until TD occurs.

Want proof? How many 3rd and over 5 plays did the lambs convert? Seriously, It felt like 20 without watching the film again. I swear we were playing great on 1st and second downs. 3rd down and the old reliable was called and cost us every time. I was starting to think that a 3rd down and 50 wouldn't be long enough for Marmies plan. I hate that soft zone as a fan. I'm not surprised at all the players hate it.

I'm glad someone else saw this as well. Even the Blitzers feel they have to hit a blocker before going after the QB.

As for my fear that players wouldn’t show? Nonsense. We also saw Adrian Wilson, James Darling, Nathan Hodel, Jeff Blake, Jason McAddley, Pete Kendall, Chris Dishman, Steve Bush, Calvin Pace, Marcus Bell, Anthony Clement, Reggie Wells, Josh McCown, Marcel Shipp, LeVar Woods, and Levar Fisher. -Brighteyes-

Hhhhhmmmmmmm. Not too many D-line man on that list.

So Much for Credibility

We're told to expect a more aggressive penetrating defense. Then we see the Cards regress back to a large dose of the 3-man waltz backed up by 8 sighing pass defenders.

"Watch our smoke in the FA market come June 1" takes a close second to this when applying the principle of -

Ignore what they say. Watch what they do.

This current regime is characterized by too much "PR" and not enough action.
