Mike Band of NFL Next Gen Stats put together version 2.0 of his 2025 mock draft, where he had the Indianapolis Colts addressing the offensive line by taking Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons.
Of note when it comes to Band and his mock drafts is that he ranks fifth in accuracy among 75 national experts over the last five years.
So why does Band think Simmons could be a good fit for the Colts at pick No. 14?
"Draftnik Tony Pauline says there was plenty of buzz on the pro-day circuit that Ballard -- who historically prioritizes premium positions in Round 1 -- could target an offensive tackle with Indianapolis' first pick. Medical evaluations will play a huge role in whether the Colts deem Simmons -- coming off a patellar tendon injury -- worthy of a top-15 selection."
Simmons is one of the prospects that the Colts have reportedly had in for a pre-draft visit.
As mentioned, Simmons is coming off a season-ending patellar tendon tear. Through five-plus games in 2024, he had surrendered only one pressure over 158 pass-blocking snaps.
In 2023, Simmons ranked tied for 35th among all tackles in PFF's pass-blocking efficiency metric. In the run game that year, he ranked 67th in blocking grade.
The Colts have some unknowns along the offensive line entering this year's draft. What the addition of Simmons would provide is the flexibility to move Matt Goncalves to right guard, along with improving the depth of the tackle position, with either Simmons or Braden Smith coming off the bench.
However, a question mark that still remains with this selection revolves around Goncalves and the right guard spot. Unless GM Chris Ballard, in this scenario, is going to invest another premium pick into the offensive line, the Colts are putting all of their eggs into one basket with Goncalves, and that comes with obvious risks, given that he's been a tackle his entire career.
