I don't get it. I didn't get it when we released him and signed Bell, and I don't get it now.

Wilson could play better (I don't know how much better) than Bell did last year in the same role.

Wilson 2012

54 T (39 solo)
Sack 3
Pass-d 5
Int 1

Y. Bell 2013

77 T (61 solo)
Sack 1
Pass-d 9
Int 2

After everything Wilson did for this team, he is my favorite Cardinal and at the point of his career when it looks like he will have to walk away from the game and retire... I will not talk about any shortcomings as much as he was one bad ass football player all considered and I was lucky to say he played for my favorite team in his prime. THANK YOU ADRIAN WILSON!

Bell was a more reliable tackler than A-Dub. That was the problem with A-Dub. Was a hitter but after his arm injury he didn't tackle well. I love the guy too...but his play was diminishing. Wasn't good in coverage either...and neither was Bell.

His tackling has always been pretty horrible for a guy who's suppose to be a monstrous safety in the box. As bad as Bell was in coverage, the guy was an actual enforcer who was a big reason for the success of the run defense and didn't just get the odd big hit here and there..

Yeah, maybe, but Wilson was going to make four to eight times the money that Bell did with the Cards (hometown premium), and we wouldn't have been able to get the rest of his contract off our books until this year.

I'm fine with the decision to release Wilson and Rhodes--the results speak for themselves. But I don't think that comparing tackle stats in two very different systems is or should be very convincing evidence.

Just as a data point for those who are comparing Wilson vs. Bell--

ARI defense vs. Tight Ends: 2012 & 2013

2012: -2.5% DVOA (15th), 5.2 Pa/G, 44.5 YPG
2013: 6.4% DVOA (20th), 9.0 Pa/G, 76.0 YPG

The only comparison that matters right now is that both are in their mid thirties and are currently without a team.

I don't know. You're the one who posted the individual tackle stats. At least this has some performance context over the course of the season. Keep in mind that IIRC Wilson was playing with a torn bicep all of 2012.

But if people are going to be convinced or persuaded by raw stats that say something, perhaps they'll be persuaded by advanced metrics that say something different. Darren Urban mentioned in his Bell blog post this morning that obviously safety was a problem because our TE coverage was so terrible.

Unless your "advanced metrics" are specifically comparing Wilson to Bell in TE coverage, I can't see how they are of greater value than the earlier one-to-one comparison, which was more than tackles. Yes... TE coverage suffered in the Bowles system, but this can't be all blamed on one safety - IMO.

Love AW but his best, even his "good", is past him now. He is just breaking down physically too much in recent years. Tough as nails, gives it his all but his all is not what it used to be IMO.

I don't think he brings enough to the table, including leadership, to take up a roster spot.

If he plays this upcoming season I have to hope it's elsewhere.

Ring of Honor for sure.

Why do you care? It aint your money..

It doesn't have to be my money for me to care how we spend money against the salary cap lol. It's perfectly ok for me to have an opinion on what I think is a smart or dumb decision by the organization I root for.

Back on topic, I'd love for A-Dub to be brought back if it's for around league minimum and for situational use.

Depending on what happens in the draft, I'd be fine with bring A-Dub back after the draft. The question is: would he be willing to sign a minimum one-year deal and be a part-time player in a mentor role?

I am fine with bringing him back to sign a one day contract to retire as a Cardinal. That said he is not the future of this team and there is no reason to sign him to any contract other than to retire as a Cardinal.

Did the Cards gave the lead more so teams threw more in 2013? And 5 spots seems like a wash.

Bringing AW back would be out of sheer emotion and not a football move, IMO. A 35-year-old who hasn't played in a season and was declining even prior to the injury, can only contribute so much. I'd rather allocate that roster space to a guy who can develop, even a first round guy like Pryor. Also, I think people are overlooking what Tony Jefferson can do.

Five spots seems kind of like a wash, but the underlying numbers (going from above-average against TEs to well below average) is a problem. You don't have to look much farther than the fact that the team seems focused on dealing with the TE question this offseason to see that.

The Cards were the best in the league at frustrating top WRs last year, up from 10th the year before.

Absolutely right. Besides it's one of those "No stats required" observations. All you had to do was watch the games last year and it was glaringly obvious that the weakness of this defense was TE coverage.
