Thankfully we avoided starting the season 0 & 2, AT HOME. A feat that once accomplished, no other team has ever then gone on to play n the Super Bowl... And today we did what we needed to do - we got a W.
However, I am certain that Keim, BA and his staff are not at all resting comfy at this moment. While there are some positives to feel good about, there are plenty of areas worthy of concern, such as:
- NO PASS RUSH... at all!
- No rush attack... In two games, aside from a herculean effort on the one run against the Pats, DJ hasn't been able to get going. Supposedly, run blocking was to be the strength of our revamped o-line. However, as is the case where our revamped d-line was supposed to generate an improved pass rush, our o-line hasn't produced in the run game...
- Special Teams... Catman is an issue. Yes, Canaday has proven incapable thus far at delivering a consistent snap, Catman also contributes his own inconsistencies... And don't get me started on Butler (though he was better today). And our return teams are non-existent... Ellington today simply played catch as he refused to run a return back.
There are other issues that are perhaps lesser in terms of magnitude, such as John Brown who just doesn't seem right, Badger who played better today but is clearly far less than 100%, Secondary (aside from PP21) as SS and cornerback opposite of PP21 are weak at best (today Winston had more to do with our defensive success than did our defense).
I guess what frustrates me is that I can't shake the feeling that this team feels more like a work in progress than I expected it would. I mean, it's not like we dumped the roster last season and shifted into rebuild mode! I just hope that since there clearly is much work to accomplish, that progress is indeed what we see. Next week we're heading into a hornets nest as a pissed off 0 & 2 Bills team will be out for blood. And though the temps will be fine, who knows what the conditions will be like (Rain? Wind?). If there was ever a time to rely on a highly productive run game, it would be next Sunday. And yet, we haven't run the ball worth a damn thus far...
Here's to PROGRESS!!
