This is an atrocity. Apparently, the voters (coaches) only consider one-on-one defense or something and ignore defensive rebounds, steals, and blocks.
Shane Battier is an excellent defender but his stats are dwarfed by Marion, yet he received more votes. Then there's Tayshaun. Here's the side-by-side comparison of defensive stats (leader in bold).
Marion: 7.7 DReb, 1.95 Stl, 1.53 Blk, 2.7 PF
Battier: 3.3 DReb, 0.96 Stl, 0.73 Blk, 2.3 PF
Prince: 3.5 DReb, 0.62 Stl, 067 Blk, 1.41 PF
The other two guys are probably much better on-ball defenders, but the stat disparity is so large that it's ridiculous. Marion doubles up these guys. Stats don't nearly tell the whole story, but they tell a good portion.
Could you imagine (if there was actually an All-NBA Offensive-only Team) a guy not making the team if he was Top 10 in points, Top 10 in offensive rebounds, and Top 20 in assists?
BTW, Battier would be the perfect upgrade of JR. Would love to have him.
Edit: And another thing: Okafor barely getting any votes? Maybe it's a function of being a center, but it seems crazy. He should probably have received more votes than Bowen.
