Site operators will often change image directories and even file names, sometimes with bad intentions, just because they saw a file was being hotlinked.

So, a file name representing a nice thought today could be a bad thought tomorrow.

Plus it is just simply poor manners to steal someone else's bandwidth for your own use. There are scripts out there which ferret out this kind of misbehavior.

Yes but many sites (notably smilies) provide the code to hotlink. So in many cases I don't think it would be considered bad manners. Posting a linked picture in a high traffic area could shutdown some personal or small public sites. That is unfortunate and bad manners indeed.

Dude... people here hotlink so many pictures off other people's site. I am amazed nobody has swapped the linking picture for something inappropriate.... which I have seen done on other sites
