Okay maybe like isnt the word, of course I don't like to see very good (not great) players leave, the reason I put "likes" in quotes is that when taking all things into consideration, specifically cost...then I agree with todays outcome. Rolle just got 7.5 mil/yr in NY, the highest ever for a safety. That is completely absurd for a player that we all wanted to ship out of town until he had one above average season last year, and keeping him around another year for the 12 mil he was due would ahve been even more absurd. That is top notch corner money and equal to what Pit pays Troy Polomolu! Same goes for Dansby, although his case is not as extreme as Rolle in the level of absurdity I cannot justify paying 8.5mil/year to a very good (not great) LB when we can fill that spot with similar production for less than half the cost.
To put that into perspective, the NFL salary cap for a team last season was 127 mil, rolle and Dansby's new contracts would combine for 15 mil, that's 1/8th of the total team cap room for two very good (not great) players! When you add Q into that equation, although he may be worth the extention he got based on his past performance he is going to be a 30 year old injury prone WR this season and will be making 7mil/year until he is 33! Between those three contracts thats an average of 23mil/year or 1/5th of the total team cap in '09! Talk about handicapping ourselves from making ANY moves in the future especially when you consider DD and Fitz are due up and we will soon have to pay a real starting QB salary of 10 mil plus wether it be to Leinart or someone else. Not only did we avoid hancuffing ourselves for years to come but picked up a 3rd & 5th rd pick to build with or use to move up in the draft OR for restricted FA. Great teams have proven time and time again over the years that they do not overpay for players, leave that to the skins.

Apparently there are other teams just as good as ours that can justify paying that much money for those guys.

Good Teams are constantly changing. The Steelers lose Faneca. The Patriots lose Samuel etc, and keep moving forward.

The Cards will replace these losses with competent players that fit within our system.

Rolle, imo, is better suited for SS. He is a liability in coverage and the money he got pays him more than Ed Reed....are you kidding me?

Dansby made up his mind that he was leaving.

Boldin was leaving after this year and we would have gotten nothing in return.

The sting of today will subside around the 24th of April when we draft 6 of the top 100 players.

yes they do, but playoff teams don't generally lose 3 pretty darn good football players in free agency

Nice post sundevil. All of us hate to lose Quan, and you are dead on about the absurd money paid to 'los and Rolle. I like the theory of building yourself with draft picks and filling holes with FA.

I like whats going on because 1. we get something for someone who wasn't gonna resign with us. 2. Those picks could help our team for the future/present. Do I like that we lost Dansby and Rolle...No but if they want to be overpaid like that instead of being loyal to team that got them where they are then so be it. Rolle picked NYG because he wanted to be a star (being a NY makes you over popular apparently) Dansby went to Miami because of no state tax or whatever. While those players were good while they were here we are better off in the long run.

All teams do lose players Al. But SIX in one off season. That hurts no matter how you look at it.
