Stoudemire: "I'll take the the rapist for $500, Alex"

Kobe advised Stat on rehab

Kobe Bryant sensed Amaré Stoudemire's frustration last year. He could tell Stoudemire was having trouble rehabilitating his injured left knee, so he gave the Suns star some advice.

“I told him to slow down,'' Bryant said Monday before preparing for Game 2 of the Lakers-Suns first-round playoffs series.

“If you're doing therapy, and your knee is hurting … why are you doing therapy?” Don't do that particular exercise. I faced it myself this summer.”

Bryant said the conversation took place over last year's All-Star break. Stoudemire, a good friend, had missed the entire season to that point, and ended up playing in just three games all season. “If you're doing rehab and it's hurting, stop. It shouldn't hurt you,'' Bryant said. “I just told him, ‘You know what, just don't do it.' Take it in increments. Just do the basics. Then once your knee is strong enough to do the other exercises, then you progress.''

Stoudemire and Suns management appeared to be at odds over the center's rehabilitation last season.

“It had to be frustrating,'' Bryant said. “You want to get back to what you're doing, but with knees it takes time. You have to be patient and kind of let it heal on its own.''

Stoudemire returned to form this year, and was the only Suns player to compete in every regular-season game. He averaged 20.4 point and 9.6 rebounds, and is a major reason many experts have picked the Suns to win a championship.

In Game 1, Stoudemire triggered a comeback by scoring the Suns' first six points of the third quarter. He finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

“They have so many weapons,'' Bryant said. “It's like he can just fall back and be aggressive when the opportunity presents itself. That's a perfect situation. In the third quarter, he just took over and did his part. That gave them a lot of momentum and it kind of all went from there.”

So Kobe and Amare are friends, hence why Amare kept campaigning for him for the MVP. Dirk and Nash, Kobe and Amare, what's next? Shawn Marion and Tim Duncan watch old tapes of Underdog together?

Shawn Marion has a thing for She-Ra.

He also loves old Scooby Doo.

Seriously though, Amare isn't the sharpest tool in the box. Remember how he jacked up his other leg in the comeback? This is why. If you don't follow your therapy properly you can screw it up.

I just don't know what to think about Amare right now. I am glad he is on the basketball court, but I am not sure about the team...if that makes sense.

I'm with you. He used to be the consummate pro, now you just have to wonder.

Why throw this bit in there?

That lame joke hasn't been funny in long, long time.

I thought it was funny... reminded me of when SNL actually made me laugh.

Why / How is Amare friends with Kobe? Talk about enemy #1. I guess FDR and Adolf used to push over trash cans together, huh?

Looks like Kobe helped Amare get well for his 82 game season this year. Spin on that, haters. :p

That lame joke has been used so often, especially around here.

FDR and Adolf? You are seriously comparing the two to Kobe and Amare? Wow.

When Amare came into the league, everyone was praising him for how mature he was, especially when you look at his situation. Now when you look back, he hasn't matured much at all.

You mean when SNL had half a joke that they beat mercifully into the ground week after week. You are right. It's exactly like that.

Now that is funny!

Because he talked to Kobe Bryant?

Geez, you guys all need to calm down. Kobe talked to Amare about his rehab--big deal. He probably spoke to Zach Randolph, Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin as well. Who cares? But since it's Kobe Bryant and we're playing the Lakers, this gets magnified and everyone freaks out.

This could have simply been a casual conversation during All-Star festivities, for all we know. No need to jump to crazy conclusions like he's immature simply for talking to another player about his knee. To assume they party together is way overboard.

So something is wrong with him for doing to much to try and get back in top shape to help his team?

Some of you pick on Amare with absolutely no cause at all. Every single report that mentions Amare's name, no matter how small, has some of you ready to pounce on him.

A reporter can come out and report "Suns players order piazza but Amare ask for a salad" And right away people on here will accuse him of being different from the rest of the team.

I really don't get what he has done to have some of you ride him like this.

You mean the context of Kobe helping Amare through his rehab?

The context of Amare taking the advice of a man once accused of rape(who, incidently, has no expertise in microfracture sugery or therapy), over taking the advice of his physical therapist and surgeon.

Is this true? Boy, or boy... another example of how Amare is not a team player... we have got to trade this guy in the offseason. Amare just doesn't want to get along with this team. He is jealous of the attention given to others.

How's that? ;)

Amare taking advice from Kobe is no different than him taking advice from Steve Nash, Antawn Jamison, or Elton Brand. It's an us vs. them mentality with pro players in any sport and this is more of the same. And what did Amare listening to the advice of Suns' medical people get him last year - three below average games and another stint in the surgeon's office.

Us vs.them mentality? Man, I hope not. That just doesn't make any sense to think that way when your doctor is saying you'll be fine and can play pro-basketball again, as long as you are dilligent in your therapy.

As for advice from basketball players, it seems as though it would be wise to give more credence to the advice of players who have had microfracture surgery, like Kidd, Randolph, etc., as opposed to players who hadn't had that particular surgery. And I would take my physical therapists and doctors advice above everyone else's.

That's the thing; he allegedly didn't listen to their advice. According to Jack Mcallum's book and reporting in Phoenix's local newspapers, Amare dogged it during his rehabilitation.

There is a kind of fraternity of elite players. It takes an awful lot to get to the position where Kobe is giving you advice. But the odd part is that Kobe gave him good advice, Amare was pushing to hard and it set him back.

Somehow even serious friendships like Nash and Dirk does not seem to alter their competative natures on the floor. Maybe it doesn't fit the "sport as war" mode many fans seem to take, but it doesn't seem to limit how hard these guys play each other.

No, because he made the rapist joke. I have no problem with him talking to Kobe.

No, that was meant as a joke...

I know it was meant to be a joke, but I am sure that there are people that would find offense to it.

You don't "Do too much" in therapy. You are given specific guidelines that take into account what your body can tolerate and what would be "too much." You are going to have some discomfort when you are rehabbing but that is how you get your strength and mobility back. If you half ass it, you lose out.

In his original comeback, he didn't follow his doctors orders. This is a fact. Remember how he never made his timeline for rehab? Now we know why. I am glad that board certified orthopedist Kobe is handing out advice and Amare is taking it. :p

And I have never said one single negative thing about Amare. This is just shockingly stupid to ignore doctors orders on the word of a friend.
