I mentioned this in the other thread but wanted to start a new thread now that it seemed to be confirmed.

Phoenix Suns forward Amar’e Stoudemire underwent successful surgery today to repair a partially detached retina in his right eye. The procedure was performed earlier this morning by Dr. Pravin Dugel at Spectra Eye Institute in Sun City, Arizona.
“We are very glad to hear that Amar’e should have a 100 percent recovery relative to his vision and his long-term prognosis is excellent,” said Suns President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Steve Kerr. “Obviously, it is very disappointing to lose him at this time. We are all very excited about the progress the team is making, but Amar’e’s health and the health of all our players is our number one concern.”
Stoudemire’s return to physical activity is estimated at eight weeks depending upon his healing process. Dr. Dugel stresses that recovery varies on a case-by-case basis.
Phoenix’s leading scorer for the third-straight season, Stoudemire has played in all 53 games and is averaging a team-high 21.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.08 blocks and 2.0 assists. One of only two Suns to appear in every game (53) this season, Stoudemire became the youngest Suns player to reach 9,000 career points on Feb. 6. The Phoenix Suns host the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight at 7 p.m. at US Airways Center.

Doctor J. Schwartz said he is out for the rest of the season. 8 Weeks is best guess scenario but that would take the Suns through there regular season. They will know more in about 1 week. They will exam him again with Dr. Dugal in 1 week.

So basically, you could get Amare back for the palyoffs assuming the Suns make the playoffs.

Also, the problem Amare was having was not exactly related to the Poke. He was seeing floating images before the Clips game. It's related to the previous injury but they think the poke probalby made it worse.

They caught it during an eye exam. If they had waited a couple days Amare could have lost his site in the eye.

Guess when he was told "you need to wear goggles for the rest of your career" at the beginning of the season, he should have listened...

And Amare is not going back this season. This is Amare we're talking about here. I think that we all learned from the micro-fracture surgery that Amare takes his sweet time to recover from a major injury.

Right, exactly. He "wants" to be great, but he's not willing to make the sacrifices necessary to become great, whether it's developing footwork around the basket, learning to box out, rehabilitating his knee properly, or wearing protective goggles.

He thinks his talent and mouth alone are sufficient. I don't think he'll ever learn.

According to the interview I just heard, it would not have made any difference. The eye was deteriorating and he was seeing floaters (spots). He would have had to have surgery no matter what. The poke in the eye just made it worse. Amare was already having problems before the clips game and before the poke.

Goggles or no goggles Amare was headed for surgery.

The poke made it worse. Which says to me, this surgery could have happened after the season had Amare followed the advice of people that know more than he does.

I'm not surprised at all to hear the Suns spinning this as something that would have to happen anyway. Amare's image can't really afford to take too much more damage. It's kinda like when Amare had his second knee surgery and that was originally spun as "routine".

Not according the the surgeon. The symptoms he was experiencing before the poke were a direct result of the retina detaching itself. All the poke did was probably make it worse. He said poke or no poke surgery was required.

There is no way to predict when the time bomb was going to go off and anytime you have a detached retina you risk permanent damage to your sight. If you think Amare would risk his career or eye site just to delay surgery and finish the season...your crazy. A detached retina is not a scratch...it's major and not something you can put off until you feel like it.

A few years ago I had some "eye specks" which occurred just before my annual physical. I mentioned this to the doctor and he said they were "floaters" and most people get them. I told him I thought "floaters" were something in the toilet - never heard anything like it before. A week later I went back in for followup on the physical and I mentioned the floaters had become worse and now looked like Gorucho Marks was floating around my eye. He said -"That's not good" & made an appointment for me to see an eye surgon the next day. Turns out my retina was partially detached and laser surgery was done immediately. They said if I had delayed the procedurd a day or two I would have lost my vision in that eye.
I don't remember having to wait any time to do anything and at the time I was in the middle of the bicycle racing season - All I had to do is make sure I wore dark glasses while in the sunlight.
I'll have to do some research on normal recovery for laser eye surgery. I'm not a doctor, but from my own experience "EIGHT WEEKS" seems like a long recovery.

Interesting....
Amare has not been moving very well all year IMO.
What if Amare's knees have gotten so bad already that the SUNS were looking to trade him but the offers weren't good enough......so now that they're committed to him they've decided to shut him down and the eye surgery is completely unrelated to missing 8 weeks?
Hmmmm....we need a doctors opinion on this because my possible take on this is pretty irresponsible and uneducated:)...but you never know...

Thanks for the info Wally. I'm hoping after his 3 week checkup that the downtime will be much less than expected.

While Amare is down, perhaps the Suns medical staff should use this opportunity to examine his knees. I don't like surprises showing up right before training camp. However, if the Suns will be shopping Amare prior to the draft, maybe they leave it alone.

What does wearing goggles have to do with sacrifice? If anything not wearing them is the sacrifice, not? Or not doing the surgery now while risking blindness would qualify as necessary sacrifice, too, maybe?
