Phoenix Suns star Amare Stoudemire is going back to school. Stoudemire plans to take classes at Arizona State this summer, according to an interview with KTVK-TV's Brad Cesmat in Phoenix. Amare was asked about his summer plans: "The Olympics are still up for grabs, I played 82 games this season so I don't want to do too much coming off two knee surgeries, and I'm go to try and attend summer school, I'm going on campus and major in history probably at ASU." Stoudemire jumped to the NBA directly from high school in Orlando.

A guy who was close to being traded wouldn't be talking about enrolling in classes at the local college.

It's a bunch of hogwash.

Hmmm this is weird. I have a history degree from ASU, so I approve of Amare's educational ambitions. I hope he's a fast reader, because he's going to have to read a lot.

BTW, do you have a link to this story?

Good for him, he should probably get an actual high school education first, but its nice to see he wants to improve himself mentally. Maybe all the reading he'll be doing will improve his grammar and speech.

This sentence is unintelligible.
Amare supposedly could not get into college out of high school (which is the main reason he went pro) so I was wondering how he could take classes now. It's not too difficult to understand. I'm assuming there's different standards for scholarship athletes and part-time working students.

I'm not quite sure how to break this to you, but ASU doesn't exactly have lofty admissions standards, particularly for in-state residents.

Neither does Memphis, especially not for hoop stars.

Amare is alleged to have become quite a reader on the road. He didn't pick history on accident.

That's cool. You know.. In 7 Seconds Or Less the writer Jack Mcallum? made the insinuation that Amare was dumb, uneducated or both.

I wonder if that got to him?

If you've ever seen him or Marion in an interview you'd know that insinuation is true. They horribly misuse words, have miniscule vocabularies, and in :07 Seconds or Less they are revealed to not know a lot of basic stuff (geography, things going on in the world, etc). Not that I care either way, they are paid money to run fast and jump high, not read and write.

I'm pretty sure he could not qualify out of HS, how is getting into ASU now?
He is a multi-millionaire and state celebrity. I think ASU will let him in no matter what his SAT scores were. Just the publicity alone will produce revenue for ASU.

:stupid: Amare can afford a personal tutor if he has any problems. I can also relate to his problems. In high school I had a "written expression" problem, which really turned out to be a general expression problem more than anything else. I have a learning problem to this day. In particular with math. What someone else can learn and understand in an hour, would take me a couple o' days to figure it out.

It's still great to hear, because Amare seems like such a good natured kid - not dirty at all. Does anyone know if their going to have another book? Because 7 seconds was awesome.

The more I hear STAT talk about things like this, the more I become convinced that he is just lying to look good. I got 10-1 odds he never attends a class.

You're one of the best writers on this board now, so the hard work has paid off. Impressively done!

I originally dropped out of high school because I couldn't pass English. I can relate.

Vocabulary is easy to come by. Application is not. That takes a lot of practice, and people like you and I probably needed to practice more than most!

So, does this mean that Amare can throw on a jersey and help ASU win a championship? ;)

That gets me wondering. Hypothetically, would Amare propel ASU to a national championship level team?
