That was Halloween when the dead can walk amongst the living. They addressed it in so many words. That is the only night the ghosts can leave the house. If you recall, the maid went to visit her mother, Tate went to the beach, and the gay guy went out carousing. Hayden also left the house in the security guy's car that night, but disappeared inexplicably at dawn. They were all seen coming home at dawn the next morning as well.

I totally did not catch that at it was the reason they could leave.

uh... yup. totally didn't catch that.

my other question is this... why were those high school kids still around? they didn't die in the house.

It was a little tricky because Halloween was actually two episodes which was a huge majority of the season.

my other question is this... why were those high school kids still around? they didn't die in the house.

The psychic addressed that when she talked to Violet about spirits not crossing over due to unresolved matters (sort of like Sixth Sense). I'm assuming the highschool kids can't cross over until they find out why Tate went Columbine and killed them. That's why they seek him out every Halloween.

Actually, I think it is because Tate is the receptacle for the darkness that inhabits the house. I maintain the theory that he was a sweet, innocent kid without any kind of barriers, and the evil that lurks in the dark there inhabited him, made him kill the kids, and makes him do crazy stuff as a ghost. He can't face this, so he doesn't remember everything. I think it is this power that inhibits him that keeps the kids around.

Can't agree with you there. I was thrown a bit and wondered where in the hell they were going with the finale, but it was quite fun and creepy. More to come in the spoiler. And Lights Out is still on? I did not know that. The pilot didn't interest me in the least.

Well, so I was wrong about Tate, as was everyone else. A psychopath that actually remembers everything he's done, that puts on a game face, eh? I like it. I loved that last line, 'to hang out with me once in a while.'

Man, what an excellent, creepy ending. The satisfied family, in perfect harmony...now that they're dead, combating other ghosts, and chasing families out of the house. Just creepy!

There's lots of directions they can go next season. They can explore the power inside of the house that keeps the ghosts from moving on. It can't be Tate because the house was evil long before him. We'll obviously be following Tate's demon child as he grows.

I just thought of this, but I'd really like to see a season based around a paranormal research team that moves into the house. That's seems like a realistic story line, compared to another family moving in. They'd be more prone to stay in the house through out the hauntings, and the ghosts may not be as likely to appear with all the monitoring equipment.

I don't know if this should be a spoiler or not since everyone would find out anyway as soon as next season starts. Here's the show's creator commenting on what next season will be like, and I don't think anyone expected this (I think I like it though):
The only thing I guess I will say about that is, next year of the show, every season of the show, will be a different haunting. What you saw in the finale was the end of the Harmon house and the second season of the show will be a brand-new home or building to haunt, I guess is the proper way to put it. Just like this year, every season of the show will have a beginning, a middle, and an end....That being said, what we're going to do with the actors is some of them will be coming back, and also new faces on the show, but [the returning actors] will be playing completely different characters. Completely different creatures and monsters, et cetera.

Ugh. Now I don't know if I want to watch a second season. They're going to can everything and start over elsewhere? Sounds like crap to me.

I wish they'd ended the whole series a half hour into the finale. IMO, it should have ended with the hanging and the "family reunion." Everything else was terrible.

I also don't think they should try this again next season. I'll watch it, but I doubt it'll have the same allure.

Yeah, I didn't care much for the new family moving in and being driven out so quickly. That seemed like a rushed way to wrap things up and it wasn't really necessary.

I feel like if they continued the same story it would have gotten very repetitive. Also, that house was getting very crowded. Of course it could also get repetitive with a new story arc, but I think they will do something completely different every year.

I think the most obvious storyline for season 2 would be to have a new family move in and have the Harmons protect them from the evil ghosts. Well, the writers pretty much squashed this theme in the final 30 minutes. I think that means they won't go in that direction again. I expect something new and exciting next season.

But as I have said in the past, Ryan Murphy seems to develop a TV show based on the premise that it won't be renewed. He sews everything up nicely by the end of the first season, and then the second season tanks.

Hopefully, they know where they are going.

Each season will be a new family and a new house. I think it's a great idea. That way you can probably get bigger name actors to commit to the show if it's only for one season. There will be some returning characters but I think this prevents the show from getting stale and knowing what to expect.

I think it kills the show. It isn't an actual show with multiple seasons; it is different shows each season. I have zero investment in watching the second season now. It would be like watching a copycat show.

I don't think any of the seasons will be alike. In other words, I don't think next year will be another haunted house with former tenants who died there roaming as ghosts, etc. I think the only common element of each season will be some place that is haunted by something, but from that you can go many different places. So I think, or at least I hope, next season will be very much different.

Then it won't be the same show, and I'll probably have no interest in seeing it.

This story borrows liberally from every piece of horror that has come before it. Why not go all "Twilight Zone" and make each story stand alone, completely unrelated to any other season?

I suspect next season won't be a haunted house story. In fact, in that quote from the creator there's a hint: he uses the word "monster." So, it could be a werewolf tale or something. I suspect each season will be a different sub-genre of horror.

i kinda like this idea. it makes every season basically it's own encapsulated mini-series and probably keeps Murphy from going off the rails when trying to tell and open and shut story, as opposed to the disaster that Nip-Tuck became after season 2.

I am with you. This excites me about the series. I would rather have quality acting and stories versus them trying to keep the story going in the same house season after season.

I'll just say it. I really didn't like the family in this season and am glad to see them go. None of them were really likable. The wife was at least sympathetic I guess, but so dour that I thought her death was just a sweet release from such a crappy life. The daughter was lame and the dad was an ass/adulterer. Kinda hard to feel sorry for any of them or feel moved by the end of the season. In fact, for much of the season, the most compelling character was a mass-murdering/rapist ghost. Hard to build tension when the living characters (the ones still in mortal danger) are such one-note archetypes.

Of course, I say all that and I still loved this show. Just ready to move on from the Harmon's self-loathing home and into new territory. Love the flexibility of self-contained seasons, although Murphy could shock us all by having a story last more that one season (like "A Killing").

Anyone check out the season opener? I like the reboot. Several same actors, totally different characters and stories. Not related at all. Kind of a new way of looking at a television show. Episode was good a creepy, playing on all the classic fear stereotypes. In fact, aside from having to watch Adam Levine in a guesting role, I had a blast with it.
