i also disagree that it closes doors - a lot of the people who've gone through the show have tried it the traditional way and failed, are young and emerging or just generally clueless on what needs to be done

99% of all musicians who have tasted commercial success have sold their souls in one way or another - many of them it comes in the way of packaging and image

they help these people find what sells, but can't create you into something you are unable to become - fantasia will never be the sexy pop starlet and clay aiken will never be chris daughtry

however, without AI clay aiken would just be a creepy homebody with a good voice ....... which may not be a bad thing..........

If you are truly good, you'll get a whiff of attention from the money people. But you have to write your own music and perform it on a local level, developing an audience, to get attention. It's a necessary internship for future performers, IMO. That's where you learn how to make good music.

AI rewards are immediate, and lately it's rewarding young talent that has yet to fully develop. Jordin Sparks probably would've been better served for the long-term if she had stayed on her pre-AI path and learned how to better sculpt songs and lyrics. Her release was immature, IMO.

AI doesn't really open doors. If anything, it closes them. Musical freedom is lost as producers shape you as a product, not an artist.

Although that sounds great I just don’t think that happens that often. You have to take and make opportunities any time you can. If a door opens you have to go through it. Just because you’re the best doesn’t mean your going to succeed in what you want. You have to be in the right place at the right time.

Wow, you said a lot here, and props to you for saying it well. I will say, that I do watch AI every week and I enjoy the show, but I do believe exactly as you do. AI's "gift" of the immediate reward does remove the artists time to grow and develop a style that is unique to them. Instead, they win the contest and are whisked away where a producer begins shaping their sound for them.

All I know is that the two blond girls (one has the tattoos & the other has the pink in her hair... forgot their names) are hot, and I will continue to watch until they are eliminated.

All I can say is I've spent 20 years supporting local artists, recording demos, playing their live shows. Talent is talent, it always draws a crowd, and the more they are forced to learn the business on their own, the better prepared they are for when the big shots come calling.

It's safe to say not every truly talented artist gets discovered, but I don't feel that's what AI's about. Most of these kids that make it have been put through the system once or twice already, recording albums that failed. Every now and then you get a fresh face with recognizable talent, and I just wish I could go to them and educate them on the fact that ALL the money in the music business is in holding song rights. If you're just an artist who has other people writing for you and handling your business, you will be performing well past retirement age (if you even have that option) to cover your bills.

The tattooed one is named Meghan and I'm going to stop watching if she isn't sent home next week because I can't take another week of her weak ass voice. It's absolutely ridiculous that she's still in the competition, she flat out sucks. I don't care if she's cute, she's a terrible singer. The other one, Alexis, I do like a lot. She's better looking and a much better singer.

Alexis looks like a 7th grade kid. When they showed pictures of her holding her kid it was bizarre. The blind guy is getting through because he is a sympathetic, feel good, story. He is awful.

AI can produce quality artists: Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, J. Hudson

It can produce garbage as well: Bo Bice, Fantasia, Fat Guy

Go back and read the AI thread from when it was Underwood vs. Bice. Comical stuff. This board swore up and down that Bice was legit and that Underwood sucked.

Meghan Corkery is hot and whether she sings good or not she is lightyears ahead of people like Anoop from a marketing standoint. Recording studios can fix the voice, but you can't fix nerd.

Anoop is one of the only few up there that can actually entertain a crowd. Nerd or not. Guy is a blast to watch.

Meghan has zero presence on the stage outside of her tattooed arm. And hasn't done well at all IMO.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The save rule is pretty cool. Though it's pretty f'n messed up how they have the exiled singer perform the song that got them voted off and then stop to ask the judges if they changed their minds. Pretty painful to watch.

-----------------

My early predictions for the finals: Iraheta (winner) v Lil Rounds with Matt, Gokey, and blind guy rounding out the top 5.

Lil Rounds will be saved by the judges.

He has zero chance...ZERO of making it in music. I'v e seen drunks at bars on Mill blast karoake songs the same way. haha he's a nerd going crazy singing Micheal Jackson....awesome....then you buy the guy a beer, he feels like a badass for the next hour, then he's gone forever.

It'll be Gokey vs Rounds in the finals...

Iraheta is damm good for a 16 year old, but she'll fall short in the end... Megan is nice to look at, but that's about all...
Alexis is toast in the next show...
Blind Guy is a very nice story and yes, he's incredibly gifted. But crappy voice... He's toast as well...

Anoop is a side-show act... Kinda fun to watch, but totally pales in comparison to the rest.

Matt is talented as well... Got the Timberfake thing going... but he too will fall short in the end.

Adam will give Gokey the toughest battle. But I think he's sort of like a Bo Bice dude... his act is too one-dimensional...

No way Lil makes it to the finals. There is at least one singer EXACTLY like her every single year and they never make it. She's the one in the competition with the huge voice that can probably sing better then anyone, but sings everything just like it's recorded, has no style of her own and ultimately fails to get votes. She'll probably get into the top 5, but no way she wins. It will be between the blind guy no one wants to vote against and the rock star guy who sings like he got kicked out of Whitesnake.

Got a good picture of the two of them in bathing suits last week. Alexis and Megan were jumping in the pool!!!

I saw that... great moment!

I could really care less about the voting and singing, its all a popularity contest anyways. Sympathy votes and being attractive when it comes to Idol are just as important as how well you can sing unfortunately. Which means the hot women and the blind guy will continue to move on...

Actually surprised with last night's country theme.

I thought Anoop, Kris Allen, Iraheta, and Matt were awesome.

The emo/broadway guy's version of Ring of Fire was kind of odd but cool in parts. I don't know if he borrowed that format from another band but it was very Doors-ish.

That Kris Allen kid was the best of the night for me and maybe a lot more talented than let on. Anoop was a very close 2nd with Iraheta and Matt far ahead of the rest of the pack too.

I want the blind guy or Megan to go home. They haven't done a thing differently and I don't think they can.

Dartha Llama is right, Lil will not make the finals. After last night she could be in trouble tonight and I wouldn't be surprised if she is in the bottom 3.

Can we vote Paula off the show?

Agree with your assessment.

And I thought Danny was god-awful horrid. I don't understand the pimping he gets from the judges.

Gokey and Adam are CLEARLY the best two on the show the rest are pretenders imo. Matt is pretty good but he needs the piano to shine

No offense, but I think Gokey absolutely sucks. His voice is average, no stage presence, and is creepy.

I loved Adam's version of RoF.

Scott needs to go. Nice story, but same performance every time.

Sarver should go home.

Kris really did well last night. He has some "south" in him and it showed.

It wouldn't surprise me if Iraheta or Grace were in the bottom 3 tonight. Neither deserve it but I can understand after some rather odd reactions.

Corkery / Iraheta / Sarver bottom 3 That's my guess.

Bad choice tonight, Sarver should have been the one to go. Actually, Megan the no talent hack should have been, but of the two that were in the bottom, Sarver was far worse then Alexis.

Oh, and Adam's version of Ring of Fire was one of the worst things I have ever heard.

AI has never been about the best technical singer, at least for the last few seasons. It is about the package - and being able to sell the package. Megan is beautiful - by most observations, I would think - and a little different in both her intonation and mannerisms. Perhaps that is why AI thinks that they can sell her. Perhaps kind of sad when you think about it, but most package artists can't really sing tecnically well (I think that Paula herself was one of the first in the package artist category).

I agree on RoF, that was pretty bad, although I wish I had the falsetto range of Adam.

Dude.... Adam Lambert was amazing tonight.

Anoop, Matt Giraud, Lil, & Iraheta all performed well.

Gokey floated. Kris was ok....*shrugging*

Scott, Megan, & Michael..... Sucked.
