Andrew Luck to stay in school

SI's Peter King reported on Football Night in America on NBC Sunday that Stanford QB Andrew Luck's "current plan" is to stay in school rather than leave for the 2011 NFL draft.

King cites Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, who doesn't think Luck will go pro because of his commitment to academics. Should Luck enter the draft, he'd be the consensus favorite to be selected first overall by Carolina. Ultimately, the third-year sophomore's decision may depend on his performance in the Cardinal's December 3 Orange Bowl matchup with Virginia Tech. The Hokies have one of the most talented secondaries in college football.

No junior QB in Luck's situation will readily commit to entering the draft until after his bowl game. There's a much greater chance he'll come out regardless of what he or his coach may say right now. Especially, if Harbaugh leaves for the NFL. Which will happen sooner rather than later.

I wouldn't be so sure that Luck leaves just because Harbaugh leaves. As PACardsFan pointed out, there's a better chance but if he's going to stay at this point because of academics, why would he come out because Harbaugh left, unless Harbaugh ends up in Carolina?

I'm a teacher and a huge advocate for education... but if you're going to be the #1 pick overall, or at worst a top 5 pick.. you come out, take the cash. If you wash out, you can go back to school.

I've never known why athletes get killed for leaving school. Lotta reasons people go to school, but number 1 with a bullet is to maximize earning potential.
Take the money while it's there, re-enroll when it isn't.

I'll never knock a man for being a man of his word, or because he values something more than the prestige of being the number 1 pick and the money that comes along with it. If he chooses to stay in school...good for him.

Why? Regardless of what happens, he is going to get hit with the new rookie pay scale. If there is an all out lockout, he won't get paid, and will lose playing time improvement.

The kid is going top 5 no matter whether he comes out this year or next, his family is loaded, and the NFL is very uncertain at this point. I think its a heck of a lot more prudent to stay in.

So does Jake Lokcer, Cam Heyward, and a long list of players that returned for their Senior year only to see their stock fall.
Plus King's report says nothing, as usual. Until he declares,of course his plan is to stay in school. Harbaugh is gone to NFL this year, Luck will follow shortly thereafter.

He will never be in as good a situation as he is now as the consensus #1 pick. Besides injury risks just an off year could slide him down for a loss of tens of millions. Ask Lienart or Locker. As for a rookie cap there is at least a chance for a grandfather clause to ease that in over the first couple years. Whatever chance there is for 2011 diminishes every year after that. When you consider the odds of a kid making in to Div 1 as a QB and then further to be considered an NFL prospect all the way to the concensus #1 pick you defy all odds. Thats better than having $100M on the table with the dealer showing a 9 and you have two 10s and you take another card. Andrew Luck is sitting on black jack, Cash in your chips son and if you feel guilty build stanford a new locker room ala Phil Knight.

Guys like Luck who aren't from low income families have the privilege of choosing to stay in school. You guys know it may not be about education though. Luck might be thinking "man I really don't want to play for the Panthers, maybe I'll take my chances and see what's there next year." Or maybe he is thinking, "man I think I can win the National Championship and Heisman if I stay another year. That'd be a dream come true."

Don't judge him if he decides to stay. To me it shows character rather than mindless dollar chasing.

Now starts the inevitable threads that we need to lose out for the 2011 season. Any win next year will be a dagger in the heart of the "lose out for the sake of the draft" people.

If Harbaugh goes, and he says he is looking and listening to Michigan and the NFL. I can't imagine they would be a better team than this year's team. Orange Bowl may be the biggest test for both of them.

Exactly, not everyone has the same incentives in life. I think if Harbaugh is hired by the 49ers Luck will leave, I think if he stays, Luck stays. I don't think that's foolish I think he feels a sense of loyalty to Harbaugh and he realizes that another year playing for Harbaugh will just make him a better QB.

If they change coaches he has no idea who they hire, so he'd likely leave.

I'm sure education is a huge factor in it but I think in the end it's really Harbaugh, he just doesn't want to say that because it puts the pressure on Harbaugh and Luck doesn't want to do that.

I've been saying all along that he stays in school. I stiil believe he does.

Funny thing is - he has TWO years of eligibilty left.

He could stay in school after next season also, but likely wouldn't because he'd already have his degree.
