I suppose my definition of "things in sports" is different than yours, Skkorp, and that's cool. I personally don't care to know Mariotti's opinion on the personal issues of coaches' family members. I just think there are other things that are more directly related to sports that he could focus on, like, say, why the Bears are tanking this year.

As far as Reid being fired, I disagree. My mom (who is not the utmost authority on all things on the planet, but a smart woman nonetheless) used to say that you really only raise your kids to a certain age (and well before the age of adulthood) before they start making their own decisions. Does that mean you stop trying? No. You do the very best you can and hope for the best.

Who knows what Reid knew? Who knows why he let his sons stay? None of us do. And that's why I don't like to read opinions on what some sportwriters think they know. And that's why I like to try and give people the benefit of the doubt. Call me naive if you guys want. I'm cool with that. :)
^ Most level-headed post in this thread. You are growing on me.

I don't understand this mindset when we don't even know the man. Just how is he going to "fix this"?

The opinions come with the celebrity status. It is one of America's favorite pastimes. IMNSHO, we do know he hasn't done a very good job. His "children" are dangerous to society. I imagine it bites a lot of butts that he hasn't had a more profound effect on his offspring.

Do you mean he hasn't done a good job as a coach or as a parent?

I'm not one to absolve parents from responsibility in doing every thing they can to be the best mom or dad they can be for their kids. However, I have to say, I thought, before I had kids, that I would have a LOT more influence over my kids than I actually do. The little buggers have amazingly independent thoughts and opinions, likes and dislikes.

The Chicago Sun Times pays Jay Marriotti a lot of money ( he was just reupped by them ), to write an opinion. He ain't a reporter. A whole bunch of people like him and a whole bunch of people don't. Andy Reid is a public figure and his life is a fishbowl. ESPN is the other side of the ledger. They smooch his big butt at every turn.

I am speculating, but I imagine if a family in any of our individual neighborhoods , had 2 sons who were selling drugs, road raging, carrying weapons, like Reid's offspring, most of us wouldn't be so easy on that family.
BTW, Andy Reid already took a leave of absence last season for the same reasons, so does that mean whatever intervention he made was ineffective or was he just stepping out of the spotlight for awhile. A judge found his household out of control and dangerous, so that must mean something.

As someone who has worked in PR for over 10 years, I very well know the difference between a columnist and a reporter.

I guess I just don't care to read what some guy has to say about some other guy. It's like Us Magazine except about sports figures instead of movie stars. I don't like to be judged. I try not to judge others. And I don't like to read stuff about people judging other people. I realize that other people like his column and that's fine. It's just not the stuff I enjoy.

I don't think that, by saying the man shouldn't be forced to take a leave of absence, that people are being easy on him.

Thank goodness we are not always judged by the actions of our family members.

P.S. I know, you know, but that is Jay's job, just like a thousand other writers. If Andy ain't bitchin' about it, what is the point of defending him. Maybe he doesn't care, but he is in the spotlight, no matter how unfair.

Gotcha. Can the rest of us read it? :D

BTW, I wasn't questioning neither your credentials nor your judgement nor your opinion.

And I disagree with you that we aren't judged by the behavior of our family members. That is another societal ill. Happens all of the time. As a single parent, who raised a son to adulthood, I understood the implications of being responsible for his actions and so did he, to our mutual benefit. If you can't raise them don't make them. ;)

Absolutely! I'm all for free speech and difference of opinion. Besides, somebody's gotta help that guy keep his job, lol. :)

Yeah, I realize a lot of people DO judge based on the behavior of family. My parents once didn't like that I was dating a guy because his parents were divorced (really cuts down the dating pool). He had no control over that situation so why hold it against him?

I think it's important for people to remember that, ultimately, we can only control what we, ourselves, personally do.

In any case, I wish Reid the best with his situation.
