I think it's easier to see things in other people's kids than your own a lot of times. Sure, there are "signs", but since parnets don't want to believe the worst about thier own kids, they refuse to connect them and then are truly shocked when their kid gets busted and the entire neighborhood could've told them what was going on.

Time off at this point does NOTHING. If more time with the kids could've saved them, that was about 10 years ago, at least.

Is this because you are a parent or because you are a police officer?

I agree with the other posters that have mentioned that you can't control your kid all the time. And, at what age are parents off the hook? These kids are in their 20s. Okay, so they lived at home. Who cares? They are still adults and are accountable for their own actions.

Having Andy Reid take a leave of absence now, when his sons are heading to the slammer, is moronic. He can't do anything to help them now. And, who knows? Maybe he'd prefer to have them in jail and out of his house. Who knows? And, by taking a leave in the middle of the season, he does nothing good to help the team (not that the team is doing great anyway).

For Mariotti to sit there in Chicago and talk about the way another person should live his life is sad, pathetic and unnecessary.

A little bit of both and experience in VERY SIMILAR situations. The parents know. They just choose to ignore it. What aj describes in his post perfectly states what Im talking about.

Right on all counts. As usual, Jersey is the voice of reason.

These kids weren't real drug dealers. They were addicts who bought enough that they could get high on their own supply and still make their money back.

????? Then they were selling drugs regardless, thus dealing drugs.

Making them drug dealers.

Ask Shane if he would have cared that they were "just trying to make their money back"

I am pretty sure (I know better then to put words into SH's mouth) he wouldn't

No offense, but I wouldn't use Shane's opinion as judge and jury in this case.

This situation puts that organization in one helluva predicament. Total PR disaster if they "tell him " to take time off and get some perspective. The Eagles are tanking. McNabb is whining. Reid has been there for 9 years and the players aren't listening. Him staying comes off selfish. Luria is taking the high road and Reid has himself and the team in a bigger fishbowl than any of them deserve. I have a hard time believing football coaching should be his highest priority, but then his progeny got where they were in spite of him or because of him. 82 said it well. House rules. How many more years do the Eagles have to keep Reid without taking the PR hit?

Reid has been extremely successful in Philly thus far. Now suddenly McNabb is playing like crap because of Reid? Hey Donovan, maybe you're getting past your prime and you are sucking because your talent ability is diminishing.

Reid has proven himself in this league. Put it in perspective. This season they are in disaster mode at 3-5 (with only 1 loss coming to a team with a losing record) which is the same record as the Cardinals. Funny, this is has sadly been one of the Cardinals better years....

Tell you what, I will make you a bet, that if the Eagles don't make some dramatic turnaround Kolb will be getting playing time.

BTW, the success the Eagles had last year was with Garcia, not McNabb.

Jersey Girl is not right at all, about both Mariotti and Andy Reid.

Mariotti first. It's his job to give opinions on things in sports. He did so. Making that out to be pathetic is just slaying the messenger. And living in Chicago doesn't disqualify him from having an opinion on sports outside of Chicago.

Now Andy Reid. He should be fired right now. Why? His shambles of a personal life make it an impossibility for him and the NFL to demand responsible off-the-field behavior by the players.

If I was commissioner, I'd step in now, showing fans and players that the rules apply to everybody.

Skkorp, for the sake of discussion, wouldn't firing Reid now be more of a PR disaster than it already is?

Talk about a Pandora's Box. So......... if any family member of any person affiliated with the NFL ends up in jail, that person should be fired?

Good on you. Minimize the transgression and twist it into something it never was, oversimplify and generalize a hypothetical out of your revisionism, then hit me over the head, challenging me to take a position on the nonsense you just proposed.

I'll pass. My opinion, previously stated, is that Andy Reid should be fired.

OK. I don't know why assuming other NFL employees should be fired as well under similar circumstances would be a nonsensical conclusion. You can't treat Andy Reid differently than you would anyone else.

I'm not minimizing the transgression. But Andy Reid has not been charged with a crime.

They aren't KIDS, they are adults.

The only western democracy that calls people over 18 'kids' is us and thats so we can make up reasons why they souldn't be a ble to drink.

They are adults

In fairness, they'll always be Reid's "kids." The problem with this situation is that they're still living at home, and as such, presumably under Reid's "rule." Obviously, when I say that I'm referring to the family dynamic and not the law....and I think that's what the judge is referring to as well.

But, I agree that these kids need to man-up and take their medicine on the chin (forgive the mixed metaphors). Reid isn't the problem--his "kids" are.

Agreed whole heartedly. Why does our society have this strange view of
"eternal kids"?

How about career adolescents?

I should have specified as to exactly what I was taking about.

All I was saying was that these KIDS are not the violent career criminals many on this board are making them out to be. They are spoiled little punks who grew up in one of the worst cities in the country for a rich white kid with no father.

Every day Reid goes on coaching before he fixes this causes me to lose more respect for him. Those of you who are calling for him to go on with his life at a time like this are just flat out ignorant.

MOST IMPORTANTLY-- Why did you feel the need to co-sign Shane into your statement? If that was a joke I didn't get it.

I suppose my definition of "things in sports" is different than yours, Skkorp, and that's cool. I personally don't care to know Mariotti's opinion on the personal issues of coaches' family members. I just think there are other things that are more directly related to sports that he could focus on, like, say, why the Bears are tanking this year.

As far as Reid being fired, I disagree. My mom (who is not the utmost authority on all things on the planet, but a smart woman nonetheless) used to say that you really only raise your kids to a certain age (and well before the age of adulthood) before they start making their own decisions. Does that mean you stop trying? No. You do the very best you can and hope for the best.

Who knows what Reid knew? Who knows why he let his sons stay? None of us do. And that's why I don't like to read opinions on what some sportwriters think they know. And that's why I like to try and give people the benefit of the doubt. Call me naive if you guys want. I'm cool with that. :)
