Full Throttle!!
GLENDALE, AZ--In a recent interview on ESPN, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart spoke at length about how the joys of fatherhood have changed his life. The 24-year-old now spends his time changing diapers, giving baths, and strolling through the neighborhood with his 10-month old son, whose name was on the tip of his tongue for the entire interview.
“It’s been a life changing experience,” Leinart said. “I never thought I would see the day when I would be changing diapers, you know? And waking up in the middle of the night to stop him from crying, and all that other crazy stuff that goes along with being a father? It’s just been so much fun. I’ve really grown as a person ever since Cody was born. Carl. No, wait…******* it, it’s on the tip of my tongue. Matt Jr? No, it’s something with a ‘C.’ Anyway, let’s talk about something else. Once I stop thinking about if for a second it will come to me.”
Later in the interview, Leinart tried once again to recall his son’s name but was unsuccessful.
“Ah, it’s driving me nuts!” Leinart chuckled. “I know this kid’s name, I swear to God. It’s like, it’s in my head, it’s right there on the tip on my tongue, but it won’t come out! I guess I’m just getting old. Oh well, I’ll come up with it sooner or later. I’ll just have to call his mother and ask her. Wait a minute. What’s her name? Just kidding! Of course I know her name. Me and her go way back.”
Since the birth of his son, Leinart has been spotted in public on numerous occasions partying with the likes of Nick Lachey, Britney Spears, and Maria Sharapova. Though he spends an inordinate amount of time hobnobbing with the rich and famous, Leinart insists it doesn’t get in the way of fatherhood.
“Being a father to Kyle is my top priority,” Leinart said. “All that other stuff - going to parties, showing up on red carpets, nailing starlets – it’s just what I do in my spare time. I make sure that I have plenty of ‘dad’ time during the week. For instance, last week, while I was hanging out at the ESPYs after-party, I had the presence of mind to call home and have Brynn put the phone to the kid’s ear and I was like ‘Hi, honey! It’s daddy! I’m at Skybar! I love you!’ Then I put Diddy on the phone and he was like ‘Yo!’ So right there I’m giving my son memories that he can cherish for a lifetime.”
The mother of Leinart’s son, Brynn Cameron, has a different opinion of Leinart as a father, however. She recently told the Arizona Republic that Leinart is largely absent as a dad, and that his priorities are in Hollywood, not at home with the baby.
“Matt is full of ****,” Cameron said. “He’s never around. He doesn’t change any diapers. He doesn’t really do anything. I do all the heavy lifting while he runs around in Hollywood with his vapid friends. The saddest thing here is that when the baby gets older I’m going to have to break the news to him that his father is a mimbo. I just hope he doesn’t fall into the same trap. In fact, if he ever utters the words ‘Nick’ and ‘Lachey’ and they are not followed by ‘is an enormous *****,’ we’re moving to another country.”
With the 2007 football season just weeks away, Leinart will be spending even less time with his family as he concentrates fully on leading his team to the playoffs and socializing. But according to Leinart, that’s one of the drawbacks of being a professional athlete.
“It’s tough being a football player sometimes because it can get in the way of your family life,” he said. “That’s part of the business though. Between practices, scrimmages, games, and parties, I probably won’t have a helluva lot of time to spend with the baby. Oh well! What are you gonna do? If he didn’t want to be neglected by his superstar dad, he should never have been born in the first place.”
