I used to be all abou AA, as well as Risk, but after getting in with a local gaming group, I've kind of left them behind. I'm told I need to get into the other, better AA games, but I haven't tried them yet. Risk now is like the lite wargame that I can play with non-gamers. I've really gotten into a lot of more complicated games. I like certain Eurogames, sure, but a lot of them bog down into too much resource management. I like war games a lot more, and Hannibal, Richard III, and a few others have caught my attention. Some are block games and some card-driven point-to-point games.

Wow, reading that makes me sound elitist and wrong LOL I'm aiming more for trying to share some of the cool games that I've gotten into and not into poo-pooing others. Endeavor, Roma, Hannibal, Richard III...the list goes on. Of course, one of my favorites is the original Ave Caesar, and that's just a racing game.

Stratego and chess are huge hits in our house. I love the anticipation in stratego because you don't know where your opponent's powerful pieces are. All of sudden BAMB, you discover that #1 and have to run for your life!

Any fan of risk should check out this free online game. I've been playing for a couple of years now.

It's a bit different but my wife (and a few friends) really enjoy Arkham Horror Call of Cthulhu.

If you like HP Lovecraft at all, you'll like this game. It's a cooperative game that pits you and your friends against the game itself. It's complicated and has an insane amount of pieces (which adds to the amazing depth of the game) but each time you play it's a totally different experience and a lot of fun (coming out on top is definitely something you and your friends will celebrate). The first couple of times you play will take some getting used to (and a good amount of time) but once you get it down, it's very very fun.

SuperSpck, from what I've heard if you like Axis and Allies, you'll really enjoy Arkham.

I so very much want to try this game, but no one ever has the time for it.

It does take a time commitment, at least the first couple of times through (after that games are about 2-3 hours). You'll probably need 4 hours minimum to finish the first time, but time goes by very fast with this game. One house rule we implemented was to have someone besides the player whose turn it is readthe encounter card and not to reveal the outcome of the choices until they decide what to do. Ie "Do you stick your hand into the box?" instead of "If you stick your hand in the box you find a severed hand and gain 1 clue token but lose 1 sanity."

I hope you get a chance to play it. Good luck!

I got the game "Go" for xmas. I've been wanting this for a while. I thought that any game that can survive 2,500 years must at least be worth checking out.

I also got some chess timers. My son always complains that the only reason I beat him is because I take forever between turns. I guess now the pressure is on.

I sat down with six other excellent folks to a game of Advanced Civ yesterday. We played roughly ten hours before having to call the game on account of the late hour. And you know what? Ten hours well spent! Granted, it's probably a once-a-year type of game because of the time commitment, but it's a fun game. It helped a lot that the people were great, the host's house and family were awesome, and they cooked two meals for us too! We probably would have done better had we all known the game ahead of time, but only one guy (the host) knew the game well, and another two kind of knew it. Anyway, good times!

Vegas, baby, yeah!
One of the things that I miss with my bro going back east is the A&A game. We used to get together and play - and it's hard to find others who are interested.

Found a site online where we can play, it does cost a bit of money, but it's worth it to be able to play again.
