Anyone still think our defense "is the problem"

We all should start giving the credit where it is do.

Our defense is the reason we are 2-2, meaning the 2 wins.

They have taken a lot of heat and I think it is time to show some respect.

They have blown me away. I've been a fan of this team and I don't recall us ever playing the run as effectivly as we have this year.

Buddy's first year may have been the best Defense we've had, but I think the current group looks like they can be a close second. Plus, they are a much more likable group.

Go Cards!!!

The problem is that the darksiders are rapidly running out of people to complain about. First it was the Oline, then the whole defense, then Hood, then Holt and who knows who it will be this week. Some people just love to complain.;)

Defense a problem?

Nope. Not at all.

They had a great tackling day yesterday.

That doesn't mean I am going to pat them on the back for giving up third downs like candy in Baltimore, nor their bad tackling then.

But yesterday they came ready to play and play hard. It's all about becoming consistent. I love our Defense...they pump me up at the games and I give them props when they earn it and grief when they deserve it.

Nothing but props this week (although Green and Hood were beaten downfield routinely and were saved by the front line getting pressure on Fathead forcing bad throws...we still need a strong cover corner).

The Defense showed up and destroyed Willie Parker...I loved it!

Who wants to can CP now ?
Not me anymore but I still hate the prevent crap that we use when the game is on the line. I think we are at least one stud corner away from a devastating D. That's the biggest weakness on this D right now.

It actually worked pretty well at the end of the game. You have to blame the CB's though. In a prevent defense, the WR is not supposed to get behind the coverage for ANY reason. They allowed Holmes to do that twice for scores.

Hence my greatest need... but we don't have those types of corners. Green and Hood both should be backups, IMO.

We have short memories.Today, the defense can do no wrong. Last week, it could do very little right.

Objectively - our front seven and our safeties are playing terrific football. They're containing the run and giving pass blockers all they can handle.

But we're still not consistently good enough at CB, and, for every big play Adrian W makes, he also will whiff on a tackle or be late in coverage.

Football is all about matchups. Units can look terrific against one team and not so hot against others.

One very impressive thing, though: consistency - from game to game - in running the ball and stopping the run.

On a day like yesterday, it's just not right to call out anyone or anything on this team, offense or defense...
However, I have to admit that I am still totally surprised that the Steelers did not attempt to throw downfield more often. There were two plays that scared the crap out of me and show just how vulnerable we are to the deep ball. One was the TD of course, where Green got completely schooled...
The other was the deep pass that Ben overthrew where Hood was not even in the same zip code as the receiver...

I think teams will soon figure this out... Look for the Rams next week to use Holt and Bruce a TON on these deep routes... Our CB's are slow, short and still seem incapable of covering on deep patterns...

Minor point - The first TD to Holmes was not while the Cards were in a prevent D.

Green had a bad game in coverage. Green does occasionally gets beat, but he comes back looking to make a play and get after it. I read a quote that after the long pass to Holmes in the first quarter, Green came back to the huddle and apologized to the team saying, 'My mistake, that one was on me.'

He's learning and improving. Every CB in the league gets beat at times.

But I agree with other posters. The Cardinal's D sure could use an Aeneas type CB.

Give me 2 of the 3 of Brian Cushing, Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga in the draft and I'd be pretty happy combining them with Dansby and Hayes etc.

Cushing is sort of a young Okeafor a tweener OLB and DE who seems like he'd be pretty good as a 3/4 OLB. Rivers is a very athletic kid a lot like Dansby in that he's been considered a bit too small but he just is a freak type of athlete and makes a lot of big plays.

Maualuga is probably the most controversial had a very rough childhood, moved from Hawaii because his family knew he was in a gang and didn't want him to end up in jail(was arrested multiple times as a juvenile in Hawaii which will come out before the draft for sure). Has had 2 incidents at USC where he got arrested for assaulting students in on campus parties(both charges dropped by the DA). But he is an absolute beast on the field, 250 pounds and can run, hell of an inside LB but might be fast enough to move outside.

It's early yet but I don't think this draft is going to be loaded with CB's unfortunately, but I have a feeling this is going to be one hell of a LB draft especially if both Cushing and Maualuga come out as juniors. It's amazing USC
has 3 first round caliber LB's on the same team right now.

Edit, even though it's against UCLA and it's helmet to helmet look at this hit by Maualuga.

They were playing a cover 3. The personnel used is the only difference. This was the closest to a prevent defense as you can get. Eric Green was mad at himself for blowing the coverage.

Draft Cason. That will make me happy.

I haven't looked but he might be the top rated CB in this draft?

We need a CB that's for sure, hope a lot of good underclassmen declare because the first mock I looked at didn't show a lot of highly rated CB's.

I like Lowery at San Jose State but he's not a first rounder doesn't have the top end speed to go that high, good player and phenomenal at playing the ball in the air, but NFL teams will downgrade his speed I suspect.

You need to stop looking at the top-rated guys in the draft. We won't be in a position to draft them based on the way the season is going.
NFL Draft Countdown has him going #29 in their newest mock.

He's currently rated as low as the 5th best corner in the draft...but I'm hoping that he doesn't rise as much as he should because teams gameplan against him (read, don't even go to his side of the field) and thus he won't have a lot of highlight stuff this season.

Unless he quits with the 'do whatever you want to us at the end of the game because we have a lead' defense, then I do. He called a great game. And, as usual, he became a complete moron at the end. We had a 14 point lead with very little time left, and the Steelers ended up with the ball and a chance to tie the game. UNACCEPTABLE.

For the rest of the game, of course, he was a genius.

I'm loving the defense, but would love it more if they moved Rolle to safety and added a true #1 shutdown corner.

But really, I shouldn't complain. If, after the presesason, you told me that our defense was going to be the catalyst in wins against Seattle and Pittsburgh and would play well enough to lose close games at SF and BAL, I wouldn't have believed it. In fact, I probably would have laughed out loud.

I love watching this D. I love watching their agression.

Me too.

If you are gonna give up a TD then why not blitz and give up a TD.
