With the Cards being careful signing free agents, do you think it is so wrong protecting the franchise with the way the economy is tanking and the dow heading back to the 3300 to 4000 range?

i see nothing wrong with what the FO has done so far. be firm with Kurt and Q, and bring in one solid potential starter in McFadden for at least a visit. And build up a weakness from last year in special teams with Kuhn and Lewis (positive signing).

The Cardinals are absolutely right to concentrate on their own IMO. This team was within three minutes of a Super Bowl win. Take care of Kurt, A-Dub, Karlos, and Q. And backfill those who leave, e.g. Antonio, with draft choices.

Make some key depth and mid-level acquisitions via free agency like the Patriots. But leave the high-dollar acquisitions to Dan Snyder. For every Mike Gandy there's an Al Johnson.

Front office is currently 0 for 4 on that side of things.

Not wrong at all. Like I said in another thread, wealthy people are and stay wealthy for a reason.

Cause 50 million dollars is more than enough for 25 lifetimes ? Or the fact it is easier to make money if your first have money?

Either way.......

IMO, it's a Catch 22 situation. On the one hand people are hurting, myself included (and at 72 there's little hope for economic survival), so we get jealous when we read about greedy athletes and coaches (see Jim Calhoun). But on the other hand, we use sports as an escape from reality and like to see positive things about "our" teams. In my case the Cardinals got me through the holidays, and I'm grateful for them. And naturally Kurt Warner was a big part of that. But to see how the situation has deterioriated, well it's tough. Don't see a winner in this fight, probably two losers, unless KW announces he's playing for Az for less money. JMO.

The problem is that we just don't have patience to wait and see the Cardinal team shaping up for next season. Some teams move very fast like the Redskins other teams like the Packers totally build through the draft and sign very few free agents. They also wait until the price tag comes down. Lots will happen between now and the start of training camp in late July.

The salary cap puts a limit on the 2009 budget. 2009 is the final year of the current cap arrangement with the NFLPA. I've got to believe that the team has a pretty good handle on season ticket sales and projected TV revenue over the short term.

Therefore, at least for the short-intermediate term (i.e. 1 - 3 years), the nation's economic situation should have little if any real impact on the team's policy toward signing FA's (other than that sound financial policy is sound financial policy).

Ironically, what worries me most is that either (a) the Bidwills will use the current economy as an excuse to pinch pennies or (b) because of their "family business" history and MO, they'll get scared and automatically curl up into the fetal position; becomeing tight-assed financial/personnel-wise compared to the other 31 NFL teams.

I see other teams improving...

and I see us doing very little. This is acceptable if we really don't care about being in the Super Bowl next year. The Giants have already strengthened their D and locked up Jacobs for another 4 years. The teams in our division have improved thru their signings (ie; T.J., Brown) which will make it harder to win the West. BUT I see the Giants as the team to beat now. BUT...GO CARDS!! Surprise me! :D

Nice post.

Honest and to the point.

By the way, I agree.

Spin. You see other teams making big money free agent signings and automatically assume the teams are "improved." The record on improvement with big FA acquisitions is mixed. Some help, some don't.

Recent Super Bowl winners Indy and Pitt preferred to draft and develop, signing bargain FAs to fill in the gaps. Dallas and Washington have not been able to buy playoff wins with big money FAs.

Given we were 120 seconds away from winning a Superbowl, its going to be hard to improve a ton
