Are we finally all on the same page?

Are we all on the same page now and happy with what our Cards team is now?

  • Definitely, time to enjoy the future

  • Not quite 100% there yet, still have a few doubts and questions

  • Far from thrilled, but still in full support

  • Not happy with the direction we've gone, but that is typical of me

  • Disaster, I am ready to throw in the towel

With all the changes in last 2 years, and the opposition, doubt, and disgust that was expressed over that time regarding drafting QBs, change of coaches, trades, and drafts, are we all currently fine with it and are fully looking ahead to our future.

Not quite 100% there, but I am excited for the future. The talent influx seems real, but questions around coaching, the necessary growth Kyler must undertake, the strength of the division, and a lack of offseason programs could really seize up our team. Further limiting our future is what the NCAA ends up doing with college football and the draft eligibility of those players to improve our team in the future.

Kliff has to start making better in-game decisions, maturing outside of being a glorified offensive coordinator, the offensive line has to improve and have at least one player emerge as an above-average talent, and Vance Joseph has to prove that last year's struggles were because of a lack of available talent, not poor scheme.

Probably a very negative post compared to how I feel, when I see us winning more than 8 games next year, if not outright finding ourselves in the playoffs.

Not negative. I think most of us feel like this.

I am SO ready to see this team play! I always want big DL linemen! We finally have a stocked front line! Hopkins playing? Are you kidding you don't want to see THAT?

I am like 95% there. My hold ups are:

Who gets extensions? We have way too many core guys on one year deals.

The defense has top 15 talent. Does it have a top 15 defensive coach?

Kyler Murray not having a second season swoon

Cornerback depth is worrisome.

We still need to add another OLBer and that's thinking Reddick will be solid. Other than that on paper we look very good.

I’m 100% in. Not because I’ve injected koolaid and believe we are going to be great.

I believe we have done just about everything possible in one off season. We shored up every position I thought were huge holes. DL, lb’s , somehow getting Hopkins and maybe most important , retaining players essential to the cohesiveness of this offense in a off season that will most definitely be affected and abbreviated.

So my “all in” is not based on us being perfect, but for the first time in a long time everything we’ve done seems to fit. There is logic in most every decision.

Does it guarantee success? Nope. But the pieces are firmly in place. The rest is up to God! Lol.

I still worry about CB depth. Will PP21 play the whole season like the last 4-5 games? Will Alford return to his Falcons SB form & or stay healthy? Will Murphy improve his 2nd yr? Chris Jones started to play well the last few games of 2019 so there's a little promise from him. I'm excited to see the UDFA Corner from Air Force play, he's tall & has shown good cover skills on his film clips. Can't remember his name now though? Our defense played better last season once VJ simplified the calls/assignments, even Kerr was making tackles behind the LOS. I agree that we have top 15 talent now, hopefully VJ keeps it simple & the defense starts kicking "arse" lol? Our offense will score points in 2020, I have no doubt there, none whatsoever. We scored enough points to win more games in 2019 but the defense let us down. Now we have Hopkins. I "ain't skeered" lol.

All good points. But when you look at the same time last year when we knew Pp21 was gone , We didn’t know it yet but Alford was gone. Murphy was now a starting CB. The DC was new along with the entirely new defense....and that’s just the defensive side of the ball.

So instinctively as a Cardinsl fan we anticipate the proverbial sky to fall any minute. But for know I’m happy.

I am very excited about the offense and all of the free agents we have brought in as well as the draft picks, I am just not sold on Vance Joseph. He reminds me of Clancy Pendergast. I don’t care how bad the talent was on our defense last year, it was embarrassing the way we could not get off the field.

He only has 2020 to figure it out or he will be looking for a job in 2021 lol.

Not sure how anyone can be 100% happy.

Our OLB depth is poor and our CB depth is poor (we have 4 roster worthy CB's). The other rooms are ok for now but some big needs in those two.

I have some concerns about our interior OL depth too which is basically Gaillard who hasn't had a snap and Garcia who is injury prone and poor. I'd like to see Garcia replaced with a better quality vet.

That's the way I see it also.

The D needs to show some significant improvement this year for VJ to keep his job.

I still say we could bring in a consultant to help him, like Wade Phillips if he is still available.

I don't think OLB is a problem.

We have Simmons, and Reddick as backups which is far better than what we usually have. I think Campbell has the ability to play OLB as well if needed.

I am concerned about corner. I have a bad feeling about Alford, and Patrick has not been the most reliable of late, so I would like to see a vet added.

As far as G, Justin Murray / Josh Jones will be one of the backups at G and I think they should do just fine.

If he needs help, which I doubt, VJ will ask for it.

Yes, you can be 100% happy from the perspective of this being a process :)

This was the Cards best offseason ever, at least on paper. Now we just have to see how it plays out on the field.

My concerns:
1. How much does Murray grow in his second year? Where is his ceiling?
2. The Oline stayed relatively healthy last season, can it sustain that? History is not in it's favor when you look back at the injury history of the line.
3. Is Drake the real thing or was that second half playing level his career year? He never showed that much in Miami.
4. Which Peterson will show up in 2020. The one who played poorly once he came back or the one who played well his last 2-3 games?
5. The team still doesn't have a true free safety. Simmons will probably play SS so that leaves Baker as your FS which he is not.
6. Can KK succeed at the pro level when he never did at the college level?
7. The defensive personnel has gotten somewhat better however I think depth is still thin. Injuries could sink the defense fast.

I think these are all legit questions. I am sipping the koolaid for now.

I would love to bring Phillips on as a consultant. I think he will end up somewhere as a DC when all is said & done though.
