I think that there is a very real chance that the only starting linebacker to return next year is Haggans. I expect Hayes, Berry, Okeafor to retire and Dansby to walk. Hayes has some rather serious back issues and may not want to risk further injury to himself.

I was going to ask about Hayes and the back, that's one thing that can get you younger than expected because the game is so physical you can't hide a back problem.

You can get all sorts of treatment to help the problem but the next time you have to take on Brandon Jacobs or Steven Jackson in the hole there's no guarantee the pain won't come right back.

I have a very high concern of what happens in 2010. When is the last time the Cards (either the Bidwills or Graves) signed more than 1-2 guys to long term extensions? Rolle, Lutui, Breaston, Leinart, Q, Dansby, DD & Wiz are all due or close to needing to be addressed. Dansby is as good as gone so that makes his situation a moot point even though his departure will leave our LB corp skeleton thin. Until I see otherwise, I don't see anything getting done except for maybe Deuce, Wiz & possibly Rolle. It could be a MUCH differant team come next season!!! A HUGE OFFSEASON that could make or break this team to very good to average at best.

Since that was one of my rare calls that came out right, I said Rey would fall in the draft and he did, not entirely for the reason I said. He got hurt before the draft so his workouts were limited. My reason was simple, he had a juvenile arrest record that was scaring teams off in conjunction with the trouble he got into at USC forcing him into anger management. He's been a couple of years now without trouble so hopefully that's behind him, but that's why I personally expected him to drop.

I don't know of any similar issues with McClain.

I was watching the Emerald Bowl last night and ESPN's draft guy(not Kiper the other one blanking on the name) has Taylor Mays ranked 16th. I don't see any way he goes that late let alone falls more but just for fun, if you're on the clock and he's sitting there do you take a kid that looks like a bigger and faster version of AW? Personally I do, we often have 3 safeties on the field anyways because we slide AW up to a LB.

Otherwise I think the team should be focussing on LB's early in the draft or pure BPA but Mays is one of those players to me that if he's there you pick him and figure out how to play him later.

USC has 3 guys likely to be in the draft who I absolutely love as fits for the Cards, Mays, Anthony McCoy(TE) and 4th year junior WR Damian Williams. I suspect Williams will slip on slower than expected 40 times he seems to be one of those guys who plays faster than he runs which is why he was underrated coming out of school and was thought to be the secondary transfer to Mustain when he left Arkansas for USC. Returns punts too, if we really are going to trade Boldin, Williams is the type of kid I'd like to get to replace him.

I also think Clausen is the tease of the draft, just never impressed me at ND seems to get half his yardage on jump balls or underthrows that his WR's outjump the defense to get.

First off, it sucks Mauluga got hurt today.I 100% agree about Clausen. There's no way i'd drfat him. USC receivers have been less than stellar when it come to transferring to the NFL. Jarret and Williams have been non-existent. Smith has been the only one i can think of that has been any good. As for McClain, he hasn't had any issues that i know of. I just think that position isn't a priority amongst alot of team and that's why he may fall.

As a USC fan, I really believe Mays is overrated. Great on paper, great in shorts, but doesn't necessarily translate to the field. His positioning in the passing game, his angles in pursuit are lacking. Additionally he tends to go for the big hit rather than the tackle. I wouldn't draft him, not in the first at least.

Thanks. That's what I thought about Mayes watching USC this year. For someone with such a great rep, he sure seemed to be out of position a lot.

I think the defense is one dominant LB away (McClain would fit the bill perfectly IMO and I would trade up to get him) from being Top 5. I really do.

I would draft more team speed. Watching what teams like Philly and Minny have done by just adding speed makes me want to draft guys who can fly. I have faith the proper coaching that we have here now, will get the most out of that speed

That sounds like you are talking about AW when he was around the first three years with the Cards.

Without a doubt, Mays could eventually grasp the safety position, but not after growing pains just like AW. That said, Mays will be drafted in the Top 20 whereas AW was drafted in the 3rd round.
