"I want them to walk out of here knowing they have done nothing in the National Football League," strength and conditioning coach John Lott said. "It's like, 'What you've done in the past, I'm happy for you. (But) Christmas is over. Mom's vacuuming where the tree used to be.' "

The raspy-voiced Lott, who likes to joke that he didn't get that way from singing, is just getting started.

"The next thing I'm going to tell them is this: 'While everyone has been patting you on the back and you've been going to the clubs and you are all happy with yourself, my veterans, they've been busting their tails for the last five weeks. They've been getting trained.' "

This is the first rookie minicamp the Cardinals have held in coach Ken Whisenhunt's five years with the team. In past seasons, everyone -- rookies and veterans -- practiced together, from the off-season through the regular season.

But the new collective bargaining agreement changed that.
Rules now allow for a rookie camp, and the mandatory minicamp for all players will be held next month.

Bleh... more hype for John Lott.

Until I see our linemen collapsing the opposing teams regularly, I will remain skeptical of the hype.

Love the fact that Lott is the first one to get his meat-hooks into these rooks.

The weight room doesn't make great players.

Which is why I don't get why his press time rivals most (if not all) of our assistant coaches.

I have nothing against the guy, and I'm sure he's one of the best in the business... fwiw.. I get pretty spun up seeing Jerry Jones mug every 30 seconds during Cowboy games too. :D

Lott's importance isn't about making great players, it's about preventing injury.

It's not just about lifting weights (players do this on their own for recreation after all), that's why his title is strength and conditioning coach. He teaches players how to develop core and stamina and how to condition themselves over the long grind of a season without risking injury. You don't get that working out at home lifting weights.

People act like he's just grinding these dudes on weights. Not true. These guys been working out since they were 10. He works nutrition, stamina, strength, speed. He's a professional in a multi-billion-dollar industry and each regimen is specifically tailored to each position. Ya'll act like he just gets the whole team out there and tells them to bench repeatedly, run 100 laps, and stop when you puke. Ridiculous.

Later in the year his importance shine's through. Look at our injuries last year without him compared to the year prior with him.

Lott is one of the best in business and I'm glad he's on our team. I also think it's a joke when people think his importance is overstated or overvalued.

I think players like Lott because he is a motivator, not because he can tell players to lift or how to lift weights.
