He’s never been a closer… You don’t just throw a pitcher into the closer role at any point in the season, especially in the final phase of a season.
Hell, for all we know Puk may have said he’s not ready to be a closer.
This season, due to the collapse of Sewald, Torey is forced to locate a closer in-season… For reasons, some clear and some not, J-Mart is being positioned as the closer.

Martinez has the best stuff on the staff - they need to groom him for the closer. I think Puk & Ginkel are you 7/8 guys based on match ups, like yesterday Puk had the 8th due to the 2-4 hitters rolling thru. Thompson is the 6th inning. Sewald is nothing but an innings eater going fwd in non-pressure situations in my mind. Monty can be a spot starter/long relief, he needs to go on a diet and take his fitness more serious to justify his salary. I would not doubt his BMI hurt his FA last offseason

Agree with all of that with the exception of Thompson being a "6th inning guy." He might be asked once and a while to pitch the 6th when one of our starters craps out and can't make it to the 6th... But Thompson is far better used in the 7th inning, as a solid bridge to Puk/Ginkel and ultimately J-Mart...
