I'd still rather see the D-backs sluggers make their base approach line drives into the alleys in left-center and right-center (or where the outfielders aren't if they are shifting), with a HR swing as an option on an appropriate pitch rather than regular occurrence. And especially when we show a tendency to go six or seven innings without scoring.
A singe, double and single produce two runs. Three popups and strikeouts produce none.
In particular, vs. starting pitchers, a home run (especially a solo shot) is a rally killer, because it gives the pitcher a chance to regroup, then pitch from his strength with the bases empty.
Curt Schilling gave up a lot of solo home runs, but with runners on base, he pitched differently. The few great pitchers can adapt. The good or marginal pitchers, not necessarily. Those are the ones we need to manufacture runs against. Come to think of it, that goes for facing the great pitchers as well.
Wasn't the reason the NL did not switch to the DH because they use strategy and the AL swings for the fences? Now we're playing AL baseball in the NL. No hit-and-run plays. Few stolen bases. And we are the inferior league, defeating our own purpose.
Trying to lift every ball leaves your fate to chance. The time is right for the D-backs to start a new National League trend. Single-double-single. It just might get us deep into the playoffs.
