Pope to be recognized Thursday

From Staff Reports
The Americus Times-Recorder

AMERICUS — Friends and family will recognize Americus native and Arizona Cardinals tight end Leonard Pope on Thursday after the Cardinals reached Super Bowl XLIII.
Pope will sign autographs for 45 minutes starting at 4 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. at Finklea-Robinson Stadium.
Several former coaches will be in attendance, and a proclamation will be read.
Pope led Americus to consecutive state championships in 2000-01 before going on to play at Georgia. He was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft in 2006 by the Cardinals.
Arizona became the first NFL team to reach the Super Bowl without winning 10 regular season games. The Cardinals lost 27-23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pope has also helped raise $35,000 that have gone toward Sumter Regional Hospital and the community after a tornado hit March 1, 2007.
Leonard Pope Super Bowl T-shirts are still available and for sale, and everyone is encouraged to wear them in support on Thursday.
Call Nadine Pope at (229) 942-5173 for more information.

Fans are encouraged to get there at least an hour early as Leonard will probably start at 3:30.

I think the team should switch Leonard to defense, remembering the way he almost kept Fitz from scoring in the playoffs.

The hour early is just in case Leonard false starts the event, which is likely to happen.

Now that's funny.

You know what else is funny? Leonard was in perfect position to make the tackle on James Harrison but he tackled Ike Taylor (#24) instead. It's just unbelievable we could not get Harrison to the ground before the End Zone.
