A's want Carlos or Conor for Byrnes

OUTFIELD DOINGS
Howard Simon, agent for outfielder Jeromy Burnitz, said Friday that his client is "close" to signing a free agent deal, though he did not identify a team.

Simon added that he and the D-Backs have had discussions "recently."

Arizona has been mentioned as a potential Burnitz suitor, but the D-Backs have also pursued acquiring Oakland’s Eric Byrnes via a trade. Talks slowed when the A’s insisted on acquiring a minor leaguer — believed to be Jackson or Quentin — Arizona does not want to part with.

General manager Joe Garagiola Jr. and general partner Ken Kendrick did not return phone messages.

John Sickles on ESPN rated his top 10 hitting and 10 pitching prospects today:

(9) Carlos Quentin, OF, Arizona
I think he will spike more home run power in 2005, while maintaining a strong batting average and on-base percentage. His defense is underrated. Only real concern is health: he gets hurt a lot.

Now, that's perhaps a bit unfair - he had TJ surgery in 2003 after playing with the injury for a year, then he tweaked his back this Fall and the team shut him down rather than take any chances. I believe he missed a couple games after getting HBP this summer. A little soon to say injury-prone. That said, I would like to see someplace like API work him out. He has such a powerful swing that the torque must be something else.

They go back and forth, depending on who is rating and when. My understanding is that initially Carlos would have been equal or higher to Conor except for the TJ surgery which scared off enough teams that we got him with our second 1st-round pick; Rizzo said he wanted him partly because of the guts he showed playing through the extreme pain, so the DBacks paid for and managed his surgery and rehab as part of the deal.

Carlos probably has more pure power (he hit one of the two or three longest HR in California League memory this summer), and is a little better OF defensively, but not as good a baserunner. Most reviewers have said he has a little more potential upside, though late in the summer that preference did start to shift a bit towards Conor. A lot of CQ's mega-OBP is being hit by pitches (he snugs into the plate and also dives in when he swings and is fearless) which will almost for sure be cut down as he faces more skilled and controlled pitchers in the upper levels.

Conor is one of the most disciplined hitters I've seen, with very solid power and a gorgeous swing, and his OBP is due to patience and superb eye for the strike zone. He is smart on the paths, and will be a very adequate defender - they may move him to 1st base, but he was coming along in LF this year nicely and actually showed a decent OF arm by November.

Conor or Carlos... Carlos or Conor... Gee, what a nice dilemma!

God, i wish i could attend some minor league games and some AZFL games. Maybe next season when i have a car i can go out to a few. I think from that bit of reading i would have to say Conor would be the better prospect for me, but I'm a "moneyball" kind of guy. I can't wait until '06.

I hope they sign Stephen Drew and then send him to the California League for a few games so I could watch him play.
