Seeing as how we talked about putting in lists of favorite movies, I thought I'd throw another thread in here for a specific genre... Everybody's favorite and a guaranteed sell if you actually make one!

1) The Exorcist - While the list is not meant to be in order, this movie is definitely my #1. This movie still freaks the hell out of me, however dated it has become. I like both versions, the original and the "version you haven't seen" with a genuinely creepy special effects scene of Regan walking up the steps backwards like a spider.

2) Nightmare on Elm Street - Of course, one of the definitive slasher movies and a standard for the genre. Has become pretty dated though with it's somewhat low production value and appropriately cheesy soundtrack.

3) Wes Craven's New Nightmare - I actually really like this movie because a) it has many homages to the first movie, and b) it is probably the most original horror plot I've ever seen. That's got to mean something, right?

4) The Descent - My favorite serious horror movie of the past couple years. I don't think anything really comes close to this story of several women friends that go cave diving and run into more than just enclosed spaces. Terrifying.

5) Shaun of the Dead - People have already mentioned this in the Top 20 thread, but I thought it should be mentioned again. It's not the gore that is so great, it's the comedy that really shines here, especially going through the record albums to determine which are ok to throw at the zombies.

6) Night of the Living Dead - The ultimate classic film, and Romero's masterpiece, is still a great film, with a lot of pathos and humor in it. Especially great are the news reports about the people hunting the zombies and how to kill them.

7) Dead Alive - I mentioned this in the Top 20 thread, but this is just a rollicking good time. Don't eat while watching this one.

8) Evil Dead 2 - While I like the first Evil Dead for what it was, part 2 was definitely my favorite of the bunch because it's production value was so much higher, with better effects and Bruce Campbell really grabbed hold of the persona we all love nowadays.

9) Jaws - Now, I'm not a big fan of the ocean, so this movie was doubly exciting. (For the record, my dislike of the ocean isn't because of sharks) Great acting in this one and really great trivia.

10) Halloween - Up until the last 10 years or so, Halloween was considered the highest grossing independent film in history (and may still hold that title considering inflation). It's a slasher film without gore, and it does a spectacular job of keeping that sense of dread throughout.

Join you on Jaws. Also, Blair Witch scared the heck out of me for some reason. Still does sort of. :)

I love Horror movies, but I'm not a good judge of them. I also haven't seen a lot of the classic horror movies, so I won't put out an incomplete list.

I thought the Descent was pretty darn scary though.

I liked the Frankenstein with DeNiro. Pretty good show. Not sure about its horror content but still good.

This movie creeps me out more than any other...probably because my father is from that part of WVa and I've gone across that bridge many, many times. He used to tell me the original story when I was little, too.

Excellent picks Chap!

The only movie I wouldn't put up there is "The Descent", since I haven't seen it yet. That being the case, I would replace it with "Saw".

I really liked "Blair Witch", but upon a couple of additonal viewings it really lost it's impact on me after the first.

I wouldn't call it a "one-trick-pony", but it didn't have much staying power with me.

man, I thought this movie was terrible. Anyone who watched wrestling back in the 80's had to see what I saw at the end when a bald, grotesque, podgy looking DeNiro and a long-haired, chiseled Bragnah were dueling to death with their shirts off for their love - George The Animal Steele v. The Macho Man with Elizabeth in between them. Actually, I think the woman's name in the story was actually Elizabeth as well, wasn't it? Weird.

1. Psycho- excellent film, ahead of its time, and inspired the whole genre, nice footage of Phoenix, AZ

2. Halloween- great film, uses emotion rather than gore, semi-realistic

3. The Shining- trippy, gives me nightmares to this day, crazy ghost scenes

4. The Exorcist- great film, a jaw dropper

5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre- the fat guy in the wheelchair falling down the hill in the beginning while taking a piss is classic

6. The Amityville Horror (remake with Ryan Reynolds)- one of the more freaky modern day flicks, scenes with kids freak me out

7. A Nightmare on Elm St.- great concept. such a terrible but great film. Is there a worse actress than Heather langencamp?

8. Night of the Living Dead- zombies rule

9. Poltergeist- "Don't go in the light"

10. Scream- Kevin williamson modernized the genre, gave it a nice kick in the butt

I didn't include Jaws because I don't consider it horror. I also would include Cabin Fever as an honorable mention. May have to revise the list later.

and I'm with Pariah - I know in the geek community, Event Horizon gets knocked a lot, but I really like that flick when I saw it.

Has anyone seen Pulse or Black Xmas? I have been looking for a good horror movie for HDDVD, and I can get either of these two for around $10.

Dude, we need to talk. Put down the dvd and slowly back away. :)

online buying. It's like crack, I can't stop.

At least now, most of my buying has been TV on DVD.

1.) Night of the Living Dead - 1968 version, not 1990. Still ranks as my top "spam in a cabin" flick. I love the subtext of the film and the production value for such a low budget.

2.) Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 1979. The atmosphere of a hot, sticky mess and terror happening in broad daylight do it for me.

3.) Audition - 2000. Japanese film that still has one of the most disturbing final acts I've ever seen, but it wouldn't have mattered if you didn't care so much about the two leads before it happens.

4.) Candyman - 1992. I absolutely love the mythology they create here. Tony Todd is at his best here. His voice and Phillip Glass's hypnotizing score help create a perfect urban horror film.

5.) Halloween - 1980. So many great moments. Definitely one of the best slasher films ever.

6.) Jacob's Ladder - 1990. Is it really a horror or a psychological thriller? All I know is the scene in the hospital is still one of the scariest scenes ever IMO.

7.) Ghostwatch - 1992. A made-for-TV movie for the BBC that was presented as an actual event to the British. It resulted in pandemonium in England similiar to what happened in the U.S. for Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" event. I highly recommend tracking down a copy if you're into ghost stories.

8.) Evil Dead 2 - What Chap said.

9.) Event Horizon - 1997. If you can get a copy of the DVD, do a frame-by-frame when Sam Neill shows Laurence Fishburne hell. Freaky stuff!

10.) The Descent - 2006. I liked the director's previous film, Dog Soldiers, as well but this is a superior film in just about every way. Scary, atmospheric, and you care about the characters being terrorized. I prefer the British ending.

There are only a handful of great horror movies that came out since 2000. And most of them have already been mentioned here. Most of them are absolutely awful. And not "good-bad" either, just really "bad-bad". Like Police Academy bad.
