Better off silent
Seeing as how we talked about putting in lists of favorite movies, I thought I'd throw another thread in here for a specific genre... Everybody's favorite and a guaranteed sell if you actually make one!
1) The Exorcist - While the list is not meant to be in order, this movie is definitely my #1. This movie still freaks the hell out of me, however dated it has become. I like both versions, the original and the "version you haven't seen" with a genuinely creepy special effects scene of Regan walking up the steps backwards like a spider.
2) Nightmare on Elm Street - Of course, one of the definitive slasher movies and a standard for the genre. Has become pretty dated though with it's somewhat low production value and appropriately cheesy soundtrack.
3) Wes Craven's New Nightmare - I actually really like this movie because a) it has many homages to the first movie, and b) it is probably the most original horror plot I've ever seen. That's got to mean something, right?
4) The Descent - My favorite serious horror movie of the past couple years. I don't think anything really comes close to this story of several women friends that go cave diving and run into more than just enclosed spaces. Terrifying.
5) Shaun of the Dead - People have already mentioned this in the Top 20 thread, but I thought it should be mentioned again. It's not the gore that is so great, it's the comedy that really shines here, especially going through the record albums to determine which are ok to throw at the zombies.
6) Night of the Living Dead - The ultimate classic film, and Romero's masterpiece, is still a great film, with a lot of pathos and humor in it. Especially great are the news reports about the people hunting the zombies and how to kill them.
7) Dead Alive - I mentioned this in the Top 20 thread, but this is just a rollicking good time. Don't eat while watching this one.
8) Evil Dead 2 - While I like the first Evil Dead for what it was, part 2 was definitely my favorite of the bunch because it's production value was so much higher, with better effects and Bruce Campbell really grabbed hold of the persona we all love nowadays.
9) Jaws - Now, I'm not a big fan of the ocean, so this movie was doubly exciting. (For the record, my dislike of the ocean isn't because of sharks) Great acting in this one and really great trivia.
10) Halloween - Up until the last 10 years or so, Halloween was considered the highest grossing independent film in history (and may still hold that title considering inflation). It's a slasher film without gore, and it does a spectacular job of keeping that sense of dread throughout.
